There are two shining stars at Sunderland this season – one is striker Jermain Defoe who Rafa may go after this summer when he is a free agent if Sunderland get relegated.
And that seems very likely – as likely as Newcastle are to be promoted back to the Premier League.
We are 10 points ahead of the 3rd placed team Huddersfield in an automatic promotion place and Sunderland are 10 points behind the 4th bottom team in the Premier League – Hull City.
And the games are starting to run out – bad for Sunderland – good for Newcastle.
Jordan Pickford – Sunderland fabulous young goalkeeper
England’s next goalkeeper
The unfortunate thing for Sunderland is that teams like Crystal Palace (managed by you know who – the great escape artist), Hull City, Bournemouth and West Ham – clubs just above the bottom three – are all starting to pick up points.
Sunderland have only 7 games left to make up a 10 point gap, but in their last seven games they have just one point and have scored – wait for it – no goals.
Sunderland needs wins and to win you need to score at least one goal and therein lies the terrible state the Sunderland club finds themselves in – only a year after famously helping to relegate Rafa Benitez and Newcastle United.
We hope we can get the very impressive Jermain Defoe in the summer, but there is no chance to get maybe Sunderland’s most accomplished player this season – 23 year-old goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who was born in Washington, County Durham and joined Sunderland when he was eight.
He’s made it very clear there is just no way he will ever sign for Newcastle.
This is what Jordan Pickford said when speaking to Sky Sports:
“I would never do that – sign for Newcastle.” “I couldn’t do it myself, not me.”
“I’m never going to Newcastle.”
That’s not too surprising when Black Cats fans are brought up to love Sunderland and hate Newcastle and we were brought up to love Newcastle and hate Sunderland.
🙂
It also reminds of that scene in Dumb and Dumber when Jim Carey’s lady friend tells him he has a chance with her – even it it’s a small chance.
Just love that scene and I crack up every time I watch it.
Getting back to football – Jordan Pickford has looked simply fabulous this season – he looks like the next England goalkeeper to us and seems a cut above the other English goalkeepers we have seen.
But Sunderland may find it difficult to keep him if a top six club comes in for him this summer.
And that’s highly likely.
What do you think?

Comment #2He reminds me of Chris Turner who used to play for them. He used to get plenty of practice playing in goal for them too and he was made to look good playing behind a terrible team. He got a big move to Man Utd and turned out to be rubbish.

Comment #5Bang average player who will go to a good club and flop, just like Mignolet before him theres one of these keepers every year they face hundreds of shots in a poor team so when they make saves they are over stated

I don’t like Ashley, he’s the only I don’t like, the rest I have no issues with. Typical of you to question someone’s loyalty on here for our club.
I like rafa but don’t think he’s a god unlike you, as for darlow I don’t see him as the future, makes to many mistakes and his shot stopping isn’t great but good enough as an understudy
There’s a lot to like and some to not like, but one thing that’ll never change is the love I have for my team…..big difference between liking and loving something.
