Newcastle United play Leeds United at home tonight followed by a game at Portman Road against Ipswich Town on Monday afternoon.
And after those two games we play basically our last three games at weekly intervals and that should be enough time to get two of our best players fit again and ready for action – they are Ciaran Clark and Dwight Gayle.
Ciaran has been our best defender this season and Dwight our best attacker with 22 Championship goals, so it will be great to have those two players back starting at Preston North End at St. James’ Park a week on Monday.
Ciaran Clark scoring at QPR in 6-0 thrashing
So a key for Newcastle is to win these next two games and then we should have our strongest side available for the final three games of the season and hopefully pick up 9 points and press Brighton for the Championship title.
Here are our final five games of a very tough and challenging season:
April 2017 Newcastle v Leeds United Fri 14 Apr 19:45 Ipswich Town v Newcastle Mon 17 Apr 15:00 Newcastle v Preston Mon 24 Apr 19:45 Cardiff City v Newcastle Sat 29 Apr 15:00 May 2017 Newcastle v Barnsley Sun 7 May 12:00
Huddersfield have 74 points with 6 games to play so the maximum number of points they can pick up are 92, so Newcastle have to equal that points total to finish above the Terriers, because of our much superior goal difference – 39 to 4.
That means we need 8 points from the final five games even if Huddersfield win all their six games – which is possible but looks unlikely in their current form of having lost three of their last four games.
If Newcastle can win our next three games then we will be promoted at St. James’ Park at the end of the Preston game in 10 days time.
So it’s completely up to us as far as automatic promotion goes – we should not be relying on other teams to drop points.
If Hull drop at least 3 points in their next three games and Newcastle win only two of them through the following Monday, 24 April, we will be automatically promoted but when depends on when Huddersfield drop the points
Automatic promotion will be a huge relief to Geordie supporters everywhere and then we can press on to win the Championship and celebrate what will have been a great achievement for the club – back to the Premier League at the very first attempt.
And worth a ton of money too, which means we can bring in some top players in the summer transfer window.
Howay The lads!!
