This is not turning out to be what we had hoped for at the end of this season.
Huddersfield had won their game 3-2 at home to Preston earlier yesterday with a goal 6 minutes into in stoppage time and in the late game Newcastle were beating Leeds 1-0 until Chris Woods equalized a full five minutes into stoppage time and where that 5 minutes came from we have no idea.
A Leeds fan had disrupted play earlier in stoppage time and had to be escorted off and that could have upset the players’ concentration, but that sounds too much like an excuse so we’ll not use that
Captain Jamaal Lascelles scored on 67 minutes
It was some loose defending by Newcastle (again) that cost us 2 points late in the game.
So in the two games yesterday featuring Newcastle and 3rd placed Huddersfield there was a 4 point turnaround after 5 minutes of stoppage time in the games.
It’s the very last thing we wanted to see.
But that’s what happened and it was another case where Newcastle should have won this game fairly easily after dominating the game, but again we couldn’t convert chances we had and we paid the price.
And you have to say that nerves are creeping into Newcastle’s performances late this season.
In the last seven games we have two wins and three draws for a measly 9 points – the worst seven game run in the league for us this season.
And Brighton went on their merry way with a 2-0 win at Wolves (not a 2-1 win at Burton as I said earlier – that was Ipswich) to go 4 points ahead of Newcastle and it looks like it will be difficult for us to win the league now, with the bad slump since we beat the Terriers 3-1 away.
This is not the way we wanted to finish this season, but we played really well last night but we just couldn’t get the result we desperately needed..
It’s probably not the right thing to say, but if we had won last night and the Terriers had drawn we would have been only 3 points from promotion but now we are 7 points away.
A 4 point difference and yes – I shouldn’t have mentioned that.
Jamaal Lascelles had put Newcastle 1-0 ahead after 67 minutes with a good header from a Mitro cross and a win would have virtually made it very difficult for us not to be promoted but once again we have given away a late goals that has cost us 2 points.
We keep doing that so you cannot keep putting it down to hard luck.
Chris Woods equalizes 5 minutes into stoppage time
We play at Ipswich on Monday night but the late goals has deflated Newcastle fans everywhere.
It’s very hard to report on this kind of stuff and it’s the very last thing we wanted os ee at the end of this season.
It’s a devastating blow although we should still be promoted this season – but we are limping over the finish line.
Newcastle are making this very hard for themselves and we have thrown away far too many points this season.
We need to get the promotion as Rafa says – but this is not the way to get there quickly.
But let’s not get too down about that – we can still win our remaining four games at Ipswich, home to Preston, away at Cardiff and finally home to Barnsley.
But it’s looking like we will be runners-up in the league to Brighton and that’s hard on the pride.
The Pride of the Geordies.
We now need 7 points to be promoted – Brighton need 3.
Did I say this was a devastating result for us?
