This game should have been over before Chris Woods managed to poke in the equalizer a full five minutes into added time and Rafa Benitez after the game questioned where five minutes came foro at the end of a second half that seems to have had very few interruptions until a Leeds fan invaded the pitch after 93 minutes.
It was two points we should have never have dropped so late in the game but how many times have we said that this season.
Think Aston Villa away, QPR at home and now Leeds United at home.
We also missed the chances to take this game to more than one goal ahead in stoppage time and you are always prone to a late equalizer in these situations.
A frustrated Rafa Benitez last night
Rafa needs strikers and good defenders brought in this summer to correct these failings in the side.
Rafa was again frustrated at the officials allowing five minutes but he was also frustrated at the poor defending from Newcastle which gets closer to the real reason why we dropped the 2 points,
We have to look at our own shortcoming this season and this was one of them last night.
This is what a clearly frustrated and even angry Rafa Benitez said immediately after the game:
“I am pleased with the performance of the team, the commitment, the passion, the way we played the chances we had,”
“I am disappointed with the mistake at the end. I say at the end in 95th minute.”
“Today was 95 minutes. It was very difficult for me to understand that. I don’t understand a lot of things in the last few games.”
“Why did we have a penalty that took seven minutes and we only got three minutes at the end against Wigan Athletic.”
“This was 95 minutes. I don’t understand a lot of things in the last few games. “We have to be proud of the players, but disappointed not to get the three points.”
“We have to try to be ready for the next game.”
We need to win our last four games of the season and get over this quickly – but no more of this late dramatic negative stuff late in games.
