Newcastle Move Closer To Signing Ryan Shawcross

One of Newcastle’s top targets this summer – Ryan Shawcross has rejected a new contract offer to stay at Stoke City when his contract ends next year.

If Stoke cannot get their captain to sign a new deal before the summer, it is very likely he will be sold and we have to hope that Shawcross wants to join Rafa Benitez and Newcastle this summer.

The alternative for Stoke is they could lose Ryan for nothing next year so they will want to cash in on him this summer.

Ryan Shawcross – Stoke City captain

Shawcross is just what Newcastle need – a big commanding center-back who has massive Premier League experience gained over the last nine seasons at Stoke and he is an excellent leader on and off the field too.

The news is that Newcastle are now in the driver’s seat to sign this excellent defender and that has to be good news with Leicester, West Ham and Brighton the other two clubs said to be interested.

Newcastle need to seal promotion back to the Premier League asap so we can start bidding for players like Shawcross.

Ryan Shawcross has played lots of games over the last nine seasons at Stoke and in total he’s made 377 appearances for the Potters with 23 goals in that time.

He joined Stoke in 2007 from Manchester United when he was just 19.

This lad would really be a great signing for us and help shore up our defense, which has looked a little dodgy too many times this season.

Good player, pace isn’t a big part of his game, so he should be good for another 3 years in the Prem. Would be happy with this one.

G – only problem is he has suffered from a lot of back problems which you suspect will only get worse as he gets older!

@2, from what I gather his back problems were all muscular, so should’t really be a problem (at least you would hope not!).

So shawlcross not signing a new contract = he’s closer to sgning for us. Bit of a leap but OK. Wonder what the guy who thought we shouldn’t sign Terry because he’s a thug would make of Shawlcross. I still remember that sickening challenge on the Arsenal player a few years back.

Not sure I’d want him Shawlcross now as it’s all about pace these days and he doesn’t really have any.

Also for the endless chinese water torture that is Munster’s constant whingeing about not being attacking enough, please tell me why our GD is so outstanding. You never do, why is that?

I’d have him alongside Clark or mbemba. I’d even take a punt on Terry tbh. Great organiser and leader at the back. Before the stick comes in remember, our goal next season should we go up is to avoid relegation.

Stoke are a pretty well established mid-table team so if Shawcross leaves he has 2 choices. He could go to a top team and make lots of money but he would probably be cover and spend a lot of his time on the bench. Alternatively he could come to a team like us where he would get a lot of game time but the main aim would be to avoid relegation (certainly in the first season). So it depends on his mind-set – money or playing time?

Shawcross as captain, mentor to the younger defenders. Sell Hanley. Buy new left-back and right-back to give competition to Dummett and Yedlin. Defence sorted!

If a 29 year old ‘competent only’ centre half, who’s never been courted by the top clubs, is our top target for next season I really feel for our future if we do go up.
It smacks of cheap options and I thought that was supposed to be past us.
Who next? John O’Shea, Sam Vokes, James Collins, Lewis Grabban and other ‘never weres’?
I totally agree with Fostino @ 4. We have to do better than this.

Sell Diame and Colback. 1 creative and 1 defensive midfielder needed.
Bye, bye Gouffy, Haidara, Lazaar, Sammeobi, Atsu, Murph, Jesus, Sels/Krul.
    Need 2 wingers , 1 left starter, 1 back-up.
Keep Gayle, Mitro, Perez, need 1 top striker with pace .

8 needed! Only 3/4 definite starters + 4 squad players.
    Keep Anita
