Elliot, Clark, Mitrovic, Anita, Atsu And Perez Start Against Lilywhites

Rafa Benitez has just announced the starting eleven. who hopefully will be the players who start the game tonight against Preston North End this evening and take us right back to the Premier league at the very first attempt.

We really hope that’s the case but with Newcastle this season nothing is ever certain – as we have found out.

But over 52,000 fans will be there urging and cheering on the lads to win this game – a draw will not be good enough.

There’s a few surprises in the team with goalkeeper Rob Elliot making his first appearance this season and Ciaran Clark is back at long last and Mitro gets his chance to be a hero up front.

If Rob Elliot and the lads can keep a clean sheet and Mitro can score we are promoted – it’s that simple.

Putting Rob Elliot in goal could be master-stroke of man-management by Rafa, but we hope Rob doesn’t  have too much to do.

Rob was fantastic for us last season and we don’t forget that.

He has probably been looking great in training recently.

Rafa Benitez arriving for the game tonight – let ‘s hope he also leaves smiling

Rafa was asked before the game if his lack of promotion situations in his career may have been a factor the Magpies winning only two of the last eight games – our worst run this season:

“I was thinking about that the other day,” “When you play a final, sometimes you have time to be nervous with the tension. You try to do your best, trust yourself if you make mistakes or not.”

“I was promoted with Extremadura, it was fine. But I was promoted with Tenerife. It went to the last game of the season and we were fighting against Atletico Madrid.”

“Our stadium was full of Atletico Madrid fans; we needed to win because we knew they would win.” “We went 1-0 up. In a game, you have to be calm and do the right things.”

“So I have experience of these situations.”

“In every club I have been at there were nerves.” “In Inter, they didn’t sign anyone from the beginning and they wanted to win everything.” “How can you expect that if you don’t bring in new people?” (hint to Mike Ashley)

“To be fair, Liverpool was different.” “They told me, in three years, you have to try to win something, and we won the first year and then another final.”

“Everybody was happy with the situation.” “Any team, you have the same things.” “Real Madrid, we won 68% of our games. And still they say, ‘Oh, it’s not enough’.”

“You have the same situation in every club with different objectives.”

A massive 86% think we will win this game tonight – everybody around the world who supports Newcastle United is also hoping that comes true.

Pleased to see Anita in for Yedlin, i thought Atsu might get a game with the Goof playing behind Mitro. fingers crossed it goes to plan.

If you have a link to it in a publication, it’ll go on the list 😉

    Ben Afri
It’s a list of everyone who has been linked with us in official publications (some of them are a bit sketchy, the Croydon advertiser?) from April 1st to September 1st.

You have to think the team tonight will be the foundation of Rafa’s rebuilding project this summer.

    subs:-
Goalkeeper Darlow and defenders DeAndre Yedlin and Chancel Mbemba provide reinforcements from the bench, while Jack Colback, Yoan Gouffran, Mohamed Diame and Daryl Murphy are also named as substitutes by Benitez.

I’m sure it has more to do with Rafa wanting to take a look at Rob

Would be great if Darlow had Eliot’s distribution. Still an improvement on the abysmal Krul who can’t pass or kick though

I haven’t posted on here in about 2 years, but I read the blog everyday.

    Lets finish the job today!

    I’m predicting a solid 3-0 victory.
Mitrovic, Clark, and Shelvey with the goals!

    Howay the lads!

Hard to imagine anyone dismissing Krul. His save totals in some games were beyond belief.

Gutted Yedlin not starting but maybe still not fully back to speed after injury as he looked terrible last game (not him at all). Anita done well enough so won’t be a major issue but Yedlin would have scared the hell out of them if he had been fully fit.

I liked Elliot a lot which is why he got player of the season before he got injured but think it’s a little harsh on Darlow who has done well in my opinion.

Strange dropping Darlow, decent side, I’d have started Murphy over Perez.

I honestly think Rafa’s chosen the best possible squad available to him. This is exactly the selection I would make under the circumstances. Would have liked to see Mbemba but best to stick to pur winning formula of the Clarke and Lascelles pairing.

Still havnt seen the best of Perez this season (excluding a few flashes here and there), but if he keeps his game simple, he’s more effective than Mo. He’d probably be replaced with Murphy in the 80th minute, but Murphy deserves to be in the mix too.

Loved the resurgence of Gouffran, albeit brief, but I can’t see what he offers when we’re looking for that spark at 0 – 0.

More than happy to see Mitro, our troubled only child, be given the nod for such a big game. He’s earned another go at it too, and it will give him that boost to repay Rafa’s trust (holding thumbs).

Still not sold on Anita, but credit where it’s due. He was one of the only ones who played well when we lost. Not the biggest Dummet fan, but can’t fault him more than anyone else defensively, and with Atsu in front of him, it actually is a good balance on the left.

Setting up for a promotion match is quite taxing, so I have some booze sorted out, will have it by my chair just before kickoff, so no need to go to the fridge, Couldn’t get hold of a catheter & bag, so just have to leave all the doors open to ensure a direct route to the lavatory.

Now all that remains is for the lads to do the business and bring us that promotion.

Plus, happy to see Elliot back in the fold. He is easily the best distributor of balls of all our keepers. Feel a bit for Darlow as I like him, but hey…
