Newcastle fans woke up today and quickly checked out that what happened last night at St. James’ Park was not a dream.
It wasn’t and we have gained automatic promotion back to the PL and now Rafa will try to win the last two games, but it Brighton win one of their last two games they will go up as Champions.
Well done to them and Chris Hughton if that happens.
We are now departing a league we should never have been in and one that Rafa did not know well at all.
A smiling Rafa Benitez after the game last night
But the Spaniard knows all about the Premier League, so given he gets the backing he needs from owner Mike Ashley (he will) then Rafa will build a good team for the Premier League for next season.
There will be fans and pundits who will try to bring us down by saying we should have won the Championship. if we don’t win it.
Or we should have won the Championship my more points if we do win it.
You get my drift.
These are the same people who said we are buying the league last summer when we made over £40M in profits in last summer’s transfer window.
How do they explain that anomaly?
Once the season ends we will be looking for Rafa and Lee Charnley to work hard through the summer in recruiting new players and clearing out the deadwood – much like last season.
Don’t forget that when you are successful in anything, there are always jealousies that come out.
So if you see a lot of criticism because we didn’t win the league (if we don’t) then take that as a compliment on how well we have done.
Fans have responded this morning on Twitter to how great Rafa has been for the club over the last 13 months after some fans probably couldn’t sleep because of the excitement of it all.
Given the absolute clip of the club from top to bottom when Rafa arrived, what he had achieved is nowt short of magnificent #NUFC

Anyone else get the feeling that if Rafa doesn’t get the funds he wants, that he’ll walk?? #nufc

#nufc promoted but all the press seem to want to comment on is that Rafa won’t commit to be in charge next season. Typical lazy journalism

Buzzing for Newcastle and Rafa, fantastic news #NUFC

Delighted that #nufc & Rafa have been promoted, the Premier League is a better league with them in it. Think they’ll do well next year.

Comment #2This may sound churlish but I was slightly miffed Rafa only went to the Gallowgate – I thought he should have walked around to the Leazes as well – but to be fair he probably had press conferences to attend etc.

Comment #3My hope is that Ashley was watching last night and realising… “Hang on, I own one of the biggest clubs now back in THE biggest league in the world. I need to make sure we stay there and make NUFC a global brand”. The truth is he has the ability to go and do that now. From a marketing point of view he could take us all the way to be a top 6 challenger IF he wants to. But first and formost he needs to realise that to accumulate in football you have to speculate and that starts by backing Rafa in a big way this summer.

Comment #4Simply magnificent achievement by Rafa with a very average squad. Hopefully will shut the likes of TOF, kimbo, mautitoon and to a lesser degree Munster up for a few days or more.
Can’t help feeling though unless we get taken over by a super rich Chinese consortiumor similar that Rafa is done with us. January was a stark reminder of the destructive stench of Ashley and Carr still hanging about doesn’t augur well along with Charnley’s less than encouraging noises re – finances.
Surely even Ash has realised that employing Z listers ultimately costs you far more.

Comment #5Well done to Rafa, but the football still average. Hopefully one of Anita`s last games, Perez got in the way of Clark`s effort for the first goal and at 250/1 for Clark first goal and 4-1 win it cost me a lot of money My heart bled for Mitro as hard as he tried he could not get the luck to score. Come on Ashley £100million for Rafa to spend!!!!!!!!!!

I hear what you’re saying. But for a robot(I say this cheekily, not with malice) like Rafa, the way he’s been towards the fans, he’s been showing his appreciation all season long.
