For the second game in a row, since they won promotion by beating Wigan 2-1 at home on 17th April Brighton have lost a game – this time at home 1-0 to Bristol City, who are now safe from relegation
That will make it very interesting in the very last game a week tomorrow because if Brighton lose their last game and Newcastle only draw we will win the Championship on goal difference, but it would be good to win because then Brighton would need to win to go up as Champions.
Brighton manager Chris Hughton – just single point above Newcastle
Brighton are at Aston Villa – so it’s possible Newcastle can still go up as Champions and if that happens the roof will definitely come off St. James Park around 2;00 pm on Sunday, 7th May with all games kicking off at high noon.
Newcastle have a better goal difference by 8 goals – 42 vs 34.
Newcastle play Barnsley at home on 7th May and Brighton are at Villa Park.
Brighton did not play particularly well today and perhaps the hard and long Championship season is finally getting to them, but along with Newcastle they have gained an automatic promotion spot.
The winning goal came from Josh Brownhill after 42 minutes.
Here’s how things stand at the top of the Championship with just one game to play.
[table “54” not found /]It will now be very interesting and who will be Champions will be decided by the final game of season – who would have it any other way?
Comments welcome.

Comment #6Like I said earlier sing, he might have copped some stick off us in the past, but he’s still a Geordie and still a Newcastle fan through and through. If Villa couldn’t win it – snigger snigger – there’s only one team he wants to win it.

Sunderland £110m in debt. Few assets on the pitch to sell. Income falling £60m next season. Fans want manager out. Doesn’t get much worse.
Or any better if your a Mag. 😀

Comment #12I reckon next season none of the teams going down will go back up, Boro cant score ,the mackems struggle both having the ball and trying to get it back, scoring and conceding, apart from that theyre ok, Swansea are the only ones out of the 3 i think that will go down with enough quality, it depends on who they get in and let go.
Im looking forward mainly to being able to watch every game on the box, Home games il be there, maybe a few away games but the rest will be on tv……..yey
Scumberland will be on quite a lot as a promoted team in the Championship till they are in the bottom 6 all season and then not even their fans will want to watch them……..KAMA

Comment #15Speaking with a few of the Mackems at work and to a man they are all worried they will drop down again.
To be honest where will they get the money to fund ‘championship players…
The keeper and CB are about the only money they can muster….

Comment #16I was one who was slightly hoping the two northeast teams would stay up. Now that that is moot, it will be fun seeing how hard it will be for Sunderland to stay in top 6. All the Sunderland fans that said we should dominate the league are going to have a big surprise next year.

Comment #17The EPL is top 7 and then daylight. No way Benitez won’t be gunning for Everton next term and going after Ashley for the money to do it.

Comment #18What a weekend, exactly how i pictured it, apart from the mackems only conceding 1 goal, I love the fact that no matter how bad the refs have been, no matter the fact wev had our best players missing for large parts of the season and at important times, no matter the fact were new to this league playing against league perenial top 3 teams like Brighton and Derby,Sheff Wed…..we still got promoted and were taking the league to the last game of the season with a very real chance of winning it, one more round of bettering Brightons result will see it happen……WOW, anyone who isnt proud to be a toon fan and what we have achieved through hard work, skill, tactics and most of all desire , well , they should try supporting a different club or sport, this is what being a fan is all about, the hopes, dreams, highs and lows….the feeling of utter dejection when we lose a game but the high equal to any artificial drug induced euphoria when we win, that is what we are, that is what we do this is who we are…we are the Geordies, we are mental and we are mad, we are the loyalest football supporters the world has ever had……….we just have to go with the rush wherever this takes us, it started when Rafa came and is building to something that cannot be measured, its a feeling, its the warmth that brings us out of the cold and I myself am going to stoke the fires of hope , add fuel to the fire and see how high the flames can get….but thats just me….HWTL…….one game to go….HWTF

Comment #19Loving it hawey the toon! I make us the underdog still next weekend but let’s see…. Got to attack hard early at SJP and let social media and the crowd put Brighton under pressure, Villa can do us a favour for sure but we must win!
I can’t wait for Rafa to extend contract and confirm support from MA and this transfer window could be epic!
It’s a lot of things and no trophy since ten years before I was born but it’s never boring being a black and white.
For next year I would keep all the keepers bar Sels never gelled I would loan or resell and keep Darlow, Elliot and Krul, Woodman as reserve or 4th choice.
I like all our centre backs and wouldn’t change, prefer Clark/Mbemba as preferred first choice Lascelles 3rd and Hanley 4th all with potential to improve.
Yedlin and Anita at RB is ok Sterry as third choice
LB Dummet good 2nd choice, Colback as third choice need a new first choice LB
CM shelvey excellent, Hayden good and potential, Colback as a squad player, sell Diame, need 2 more CM
Wings Ritchie class, need Townsend, Atsu and Aaarons to back up, Perez as 5th choice
Number 10 goodbye Siem de Jong, Perez ok, gayle possible, need a new one or two
Forwards. Gayle good 2nd choice, Murphy finished product for next year I might keep, mitrovic can’t make my mind up, I would loan to championship side next year and bring back after Murphy goes. Armstrong also keep but another year in championship
So sell Sels, mbabu, saivet, thauvin, Diame, gouffran, riviere, ameobi, de Jong, just get rid, if the transfers don’t go well I might keep de Jong for a final go.
Buy Luke shaw or the Leeds lad (‘as 2nd choice) for LB
Buy Andros townsend
For cm and number 10 McCarthy, cairney, Delph, Wilshire, Loftus cheek on loan
Striker tammy Abrahams and either Sturrige or Jermain defoe
Team next year
Darlow, Krul, Elliot
Yedlin, Anita, Sterry
Shaw, Dummet
Clark, Mbemba, Lascelles, Hanley
Shelvey, Hayden, Delph, Wilshire, Colback
Ritchie, Townsend, Atsu, aarons
Perez, de Jong
Gayle, sturridge, Murphy, tammy Abrahams
Armstrong and mitrovic away on loan
Would expect shaw 15 million, Townsend 13 million, Atsu 4 million, Delph 15 million, sturridge 20 million, wilshere 15 million 82 million outlay also possible to get Leeds lad and Defoe for free
Might get 7 million max for the ones we are leaving so 75million would be right leaving only 2 potentials away on loan. I would expect another 10 million to be spent on 6 or 7 new under 23s players for the future so I hope MA will find us to 85 million please!
