Newcastle were reportedly after Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph last January and there’s a report in the Guardian that Rafa Benitez may still want to sign him this summer.
It would not be surprising if the media report every single player Newcastle were after in January, because it would be a decent enough supposition that Benitez could want to sign them this summer.
Rafa will be looking to sign up to seven potential starters for Newcastle in the summer and he will looking for class to improve the quality of the Newcastle squad.
The Newcastle starting eleven in the first game of next season in the Premier League could have up to half of the side be new players signed this summer – but we shall see.
Fabian Delph – a Newcastle target this summer
Rafa is also expected to purge a huge number of players this summer who are simply surplus to requirements now that Benitez is building a squad to compete in the Premier League.
Because we are back in the Premier League the playing standards will be raised at Newcastle.
Not unlike a number of English players who sign for Manchester City, Delph has only played rarely and has just 40 appearances with four goals in the almost two years he’s been at the Etihad Stadium.
It’s almost certain he will be allowed to leave the club this summer and that’s good for Fabian’s career, which has gone in the doldrums these last couple of years.
He cost Manchester City £8M two years ago when he signed on from Aston Villa and we would expect City to want at least that much for him if he was to be sold to Newcastle.
In some cases Rafa Benitez may bring in a player on loan with an option to buy so he can check that the player is good enough for his new Newcastle side and that could be the case for Delph.
While at Aston Villa for six years before joining City in the summer of 2015 he played 134 times with 8 goals and 8 assists and he has a total of 9 England caps.
Fabian is a very good technical player and Rafa could certainly bring out the best in him, because the 27 year-old certainly has the skill and the ability.
He would be a decent enough signing for say £8M.
