There is a report today in the Sun that Everton had been favorites to sign Sunderland’s outstanding young goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford.
But the rather surprising news this morning is that it’s Newcastle who are moving very quickly to sign the 23-year-old Washington, County Durham born England U21 International.
Newcastle are reported to have made a shock move and are prepared to offer the Sunderland goalkeeper a long-term contract worth £75K a week.
Jordan Pickford – Sunderland talented young goalkeeper
Newcastle have Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow vying for the number one position at the club right now and both have been stellar performers for Newcastle over the last couple of years.
Rob last season was our Player of the Season and Karl this term has been simply outstanding – one of the best if not the best Championship goalkeeper this season.
We also have the experienced Tim Krul coming back from loan and we also have newly signed Matz Sels.
So it would be a surprise if Rafa Benitez wants to sign Pickford, but possible.
And only recently the 23 year-old long term (like since being born) Sunderland supporter said there was no way he would ever sign for Sunderland’s bitter local rivals.
Two weeks ago this is what Jordan said when asked by Sky Sports if he would sign for Newcastle United:
“I would never do that – sign for Newcastle.” “I couldn’t do it myself, not me.”
“I’m never going to Newcastle.”
You know maybe we are wrong, – but we don’t think he wants to sign for Newcastle.
This is all very interesting and it seems that Newcastle may very well be keen on signing Jordan with the move always being dependent on Sunderland being relegated and Newcastle being promoted.
That’s the exact situation now and there is no way the Black Cats will be able to keep Jordan down below.
That’s some of the enormous collateral damage that comes with relegation – and yes – it sucks for the relegated club.
It will also be very difficult for Sunderland to come straight back up unless they can get their act together very quickly this summer.
That’s going to be very important for the Black Cats.
It seems the Magpies want Jordan and the big question is whether this outstanding young English goalkeeper of the future sign for us?
