Rafa Wants To Sign Arsenal’s Calum Chambers This Summer

There’s a good report in the Telegraph today that Newcastle United are interested in signing Arsenal’s Calum Chambers and James McCarthy from Everton this summer.

We know that James McCarthy has been a strong target since January and there were also rumors in January Rafa wanted Cal Chambers who is currently on loan from Arsenal at Middlesbrough for the season, so he gets some playing time.

Calum Chambers in Arsenal colors

Calum is a very good young player who came through Southampton’s Youth Academy before signing on at Arsenal for around £13M three years ago,

He turned 22 years old in January and he’s made 23 total appearances for Middlesbrough on loan this season.

Chambers is a versatile player who can  play at right back or center-back and if Rafa is interested he obviously thinks he can improve the 3 times capped England International.

Certainly Calum is a classy young player and should have a great future ahead of him in the game.

He joined Southampton at the age of seven back in 2002 and came though their famous Youth Academy and eventually played 25 times for the Saints first team before moving to Arsenal in the summer of 2014.

In the two seasons he was at Arsenal vying for a first team place he played  58 times for them before moving on loan to Middlesbrough last summer for the season.

He made his debut for England against Norway back in September, 2104 when England won 1–0 at Wembley Stadium.

We’ve always thought of Calum as an excellent young technical player with great potential and we think that Rafa can bring out that potential at Newcastle, if we can sign him.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Chambers would be a good player to sign although the worry would be Arsenal signed him for 13 million 3 seasons ago its doubtful they would be selling him cheap!

Is he really a 20 million plus player at the moment?!

On your previous post, the animosity toward Ashley came from a complete lack of ambition and a determination to turn us in to a non sporting advertising hoarding for his main business.

Too many people seem to be worrying about players prices, Rafa will be well aware of increase in market value and will present his plan to Mikey.

    You really are quite unintelligent.

    Jimmy said:-

“fans who have extreme antipathy toward Ashley for whatever reason don’t take into enough consideration the money he has put in”

You just listed reasons for the antipathy (which Jimy had already acknowledged) without addressing the thrust of his argument one jot.

Yeah, that’s Ashley’s primary interest, or was certainly, and certainly he doesn’t want to do his dough, but the point I’ve been making is that Ashley has been prepared to back the club financially, and that being the case we’ve only really needed someone with the gravitas of Benitez to speak truth to power, gain the owners faith and trust, and in doing so tip the scales in our favour. My greatest concern really is that we get that bit of luck you need to have success, because I think Ashley will back Benitez at least in the short term. I don’t think Benitez would be here at all if this wasn’t the case.

You’re either one of the boys or a billionaire, you can’t be both as I’m sure he figured out, since he wore the strip and drank pints with the lads.

He hired popular people (KK, shearer) and it backfired. He hired his own, it backfired.

Played the laissez faire, and the opposite, to similar effect. Tried to tighten the budget and poured money in to buy himself out of trouble. Nowt.

Kept the name of a saint for a stadium, ditto.

If he makes the money available, Rafa’s the hero, he submitted to his great negotiating skills. Doesn’t make it available, he’s history. Rafa has ambition, he wants a below average team and to be hated and bullied by the Geordie nation.

He can’t win, really. We need a villain.

@5, Arsenal signed him 3yrs ago – so thats 3 years off his contract value. Add the fact he’s not been a regular in the gooners 1st team, a good loan spell will not make him hold that much value. I think he’ll be like a Clark signing £5-7m.

I see Kurt Zouma is available (at least on loan), what are peoples thoughts on him?
If we could get a loan with buy-after clause I’d snap him up 🙂

Chambers definitely one I think Rafa will want, defensive right back but still ok going forward (more progressive than Dummett) anyone remember when we got thrashed by poch’s saints 4-0 he had chambers at right back although he didn’t have great pace he did get up and down the pitch really well and put crosses in

I dont doubt we would be looking at experienced players I just doubt it would be Mccarthy ! Personally think we can do much better in midfield than sign him! An upgrade on Colback but not that much better !

70 million in my opinion may not be enough if we have to generate some of the cash from sales. I would keep krul personally as I still think he’s our best shot stopper and maybe de jong until January. I would take chambers too, i think hes a good player, young and British.
Just about flying the banner over I don’t see the issue tbh. Some fans paying out of their own pockets to have a chuckle at Sunderland is part and parcel of north east football and just banter. Let’s be honest they’ve took every opportunity to try and ridicule us even now they’re relegated and in a right mess!
It’s what makes the north east rivalry one of the best!

I think Zouma would be a great signing if he gets back to the form he had before the injury, he looked like real quality last season. I think he’s very highly rated at Chelsea so I would imagine it would be hard to get the buy on after the loan

Cyprus – heartbreaking. Except for the fact that Ashley only has to pull off some masterful PR stunts and back Rafa convincingly in order to propel himself back into the Geordie trust circle. And he only has to do that because of the rough, shoddy way he treated the club and it’s fans for years with his greedy business-first-and-last model.

We’ve been unsuccessfully trying a version of attacking full backs for years, only with full backs who can’t cross or run particularly fast, and with “wingers” who couldn’t endure the endless running back and covering, never mind being rubbish at it.

    Time for a change methinks

Nar mate McCarthy is a good player he’s a Carrick type very underrated last time I looked his stats were slightly better than Carricks. He’s quite a bit better than Colback as a CDM but the Colbacks much better box to box anyway

Midfield for me is certainly the area where we need to improve from everything such as our work rate at closing down, passing, movement and creativity so we do we need a few players who can improve us!

What we know about the next 3 months:
We’re getting promoted to the premier league

What we don’t know about the next 3 months:
Whether or not we’ll be champions or second?
    Will mike back Rafa?
How much will he give him? £20mil or £120mil? Or something in between?
Will Rafa keep the same system next year or build a team based on 3 at the back?
What calibre of player will we be looking at?
    Who will be sold?
Will Leeroy get banged up again?
What will the new strip look like?
    Who will the sponsor be?
Where will we play pre season?
Will Rafa add any back room staff? Will he replace Cathro?

I think there are some pointers to what may come to pass with Rafa in certain positions.
As Tsunki touched on , Senor Benitez loves his classy wing back type players – John Arne Riise at LPool , and Ashley Cole at Chelsea was his favourite player.
That’s what he thought he was getting with Lazar and Gamez but they bombed – he’ll probably get someone to augment Deandre Yedlin.
I think we’ll see more of 3 across the back with
Lascelles or M’bemba sweeping in front.
Ritchie and Perez playing more of a tucked in inside forward role .
We were supposed to be scouting Porto’s Mexican aggressive midfielder Héctor Herrera in the winter – I can see him coming in to work with Shelvey.
On a few occasions Rafa’s former PL sides played some stunning attacking footy at home. He is now at a club with fans that he realises love to be entertained (the Geordies will forgive a manager a multitude of sins if he excites them) and I think that for him is one of the major attractions

Last Summer, Rafa sold, or released, about 14 players. Four of which, Gini, Sulko, Andros, and a lazy right-back, for a total of about £75m, and reduced the wage bill considerably.

Rafa spent that cash on the nucleus of a squad designed to gain promotion to the Championship, and the strategy was successful

Realistically, Rafa has to be as ruthless this close season. Of the players who Rafa bought a year ago, with the intention to succeed in the Championship, Richie, Hayden, Clark and Yedlin will progress to the new Premiership squad.

Gayle has enjoyed a good season in the Championship, at least when he has been available, his fitness and fragility are a concern, it is true he will be better protected by the refs in the EPL, but his injuries weren’t because of fouling, or over vigorous tackling, but through his own exertions. His future at the club is dependent on the prognosis by the medical staff.

Although a substantial number of squad members, ‘end of contract’ ‘past their sell-by date’ or simply ‘dead-wood’, left the club last Summer, Rafa will have to be even more surgical this time.

A reasonable number of this year’s squad, who have contributed to the first team’s success, will have enhanced their reputations, and will be attractive to next year’s wannabee promotion contenders. Good luck Hanley, Murphy and Gouffran.

Looking forward to Rafa’s recruitment safari; He will generate a reasonable amount of money through sales and the profit from last year’s transfer activities. If Rafa decides to sell any, or all, of Gayle, Perez or Mitro, (£40m+perhaps?) then he could have a reasonably handsome war-chest.

There would appear reasonable grounds for optimism regarding possible transfer funding. No doubt some/most of the cash generated by past and future sales of players leaving the club, will not be received immediately, however.

Should it be the case that a transfer fund of about £100m, the question is how do you invest it?

    Do you bring in 7/8 players @£10 to £15m each, or 3 or 4 @ £20m/£30m each?

If we are to try and compete with the top EPL clubs, we have to match their ambitions and methodology. Chelsea will probably only buy 2/3 marquee players this Summer, (probably re-stack the Academy squad however, future monies to be made there, I’m nodding to you Michael Ashley…)

If Rafa was to sign 3 or 4 top class players this Summer, it will be easier to integrate into the team. We have a very Happy, United dressing-room at present, probably as unified as the Nolan/Harper gang of seven years ago. Don’t lose it, it’s hard to build.

    Four positions where we need top class Signings;
Assuming a three man backline, in front of them a modern number five, part defensive enforcer, part deep-lying playmaker, a Jonathan Woodgate type, perhaps.

Dummett can look back on this season with pride, he is our best defender, but he has limitations as a creative attacker. However there should be a place for him in a back three format. We desperately need a top class wing back.

The mid-field for next season will benefit with the addition of a ‘Cante’ type defensive mid-fielders, (no sh”” sherlock!) so could all the other Premiership sides, except Chelsea.

We need a top class number 10, we have the blueprint, it’s name is Beardsley, go find!

Finally, and inevitably, a number 9. Mitro has a wonderful heart, but hearts don’t kick or head goals, however give me a Mitro to a Sulko any day. Sorry, but thank you, and good luck.

Any one of those positions could be our next Captain. Lascelles has been OK, but only just OK. We need a voice, or for that matter, many voices! At its best SJP in not the Emirates. (thank god) it’s very noisy, so we need a leader(s) on the pitch who can be heard. Something for the training ground, make them wear ear plugs so they have to shout! perhaps.

    Roll on Sunday… HWTL…

It shows how crap our club was being run in the eighties when the likes of Carrick, Shearer and Bruce plus Pedro were allowed to go from Wallsend boys club to West Ham, Southampton, etc. It wouldn’t have been so bad if they’d been picked up from obscurity but Wallsend Boys!
This is one thing that makes me laugh about the present ownership. Our club was a shambles from the mid seventies up to the KK management era but even then KK did away with the reserves so there was no plan. I will forgive him though! Genius!

How much Rafa has to spend in the summer really should be a commercial secret. We don’t want the other clubs to know how much Rafa has in the kitty or the asking price will rise accordingly.

There will be a large discrepancy between want some of the fans want to be made available and the actual amount that Rafa gets.

My hope is that Ashley and Charnley are realistic in how many players we need to bring in and the cost that will be incurred.

If by the end of the transfer window Rafa is content with what who he has brought in / released than I’ll be happy.

The only drawback is if Mr Ashley thinks that he can have premiership players at championship prices. Especially if the limit of his ambition is survival in the PL. No winning cups or any of that silly nonsense. Just finish around 15th, and keep bringing in the TV revenues for SportsDirect!

Lets hope for a bright start and sit back and enjoy the ride.
