Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez will have 20 year-old local striker Adam Armstrong back for pre-season training, but it doesn’t look like Adam is ready to fight for a first team place next season at Newcastle.
Since we play Barnsley in our last game on Sunday afternoon and Adam is ineligible his loan move is now over at the Tykes.
Adam will try to convince manager Rafa Benitez in pre-season to include him in the squad, as he did last year when he was loaned out to Barnsley for what turned out to be the full season.
Adam Armstrong while on loan at Barnsley
Adam did extremely well last season when he was on loan at League One club Coventry where he scored an impressive 20 goals in 40 total appearances for the Sky Blues.
But this season in a step up in class he was able to notch only 6 goals in 35 appearances for the Tykes and that has to be a disappointing return for one we have very high hopes for.
It’s likely he will be loaned out to another Championship club for next season, but it looks like Barnsley may not be interested in taking him back.
The Mag today looked at various comments from Barnsley fans about Armstrong and some of them were not complimentary and some even said he was lazy and one said he was a waste of space.
Of course you can always find negative comments as well as positive ones, but the genuine surprise was that most were not too positive.
The question becomes whether Adam will go the way of some of our other very promising local lads like Adam Campbell and not make it at his home town club.
We are hoping that’s not the case but we do think it will be difficult for Adam to make the Newcastle first team squad for next season unless of course he is outstanding in pre-season.
That would be good.
He is now 20 years old and time to make his breakthrough at Newcastle United.
Here’s a poll we issued on April 19th.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41I haven’t posted on the mag for at least a season and then only rarely. I give every manager we get a chance because, Der! He’s our manager. I want success you idiot. I’ve forgotten more about football than you’ll ever know you clown. My son knows more than you ffs. I don’t boo our players either because they’re our players. Your posts say you don’t rate Arma you idiot. Try reading what you write. Don’t you remember getting really excited and posting some nonsense about me attacking you PURELY because you dissed Arma? Liars need a good memory. Still waiting, what games did you attend?*How hard is that? Gobshyte, nothing more. Full of it.

Comment #44Would anyone take Lucas from Liverpool? Available on a free transfer and Rafa signed him would add a bit of depth and experience in defensive midfield

Comment #45As I thought, no games. 🙂 wow, a grown man – sort of anyway, although that is in question – making up a life because his own is so bland. Kilmarnock are at home this Saturday. Closer than Coventry. Are you going up there to give us your expert opinion on Roberts and Woody? 🙂 I’m sure the blog would love to hear your appraisals of our young players. 🙂 Like you did about Arma… Oh no, wait, you didn’t bother mentioning it at the time did you? 🙂 Funny funny man. 🙂 Here’s a clue if you go to Kilmarnock or Tuff. Look for the floodlights, they normally have them at a football ground, it’ll help you find your way 🙂 (I take it you know what floodlights look like?) The pitch is the big bit of green ground and the goalposts are those white oblong things at each end 🙂 You’ll pick up the rules as you go along.

Comment #46Lee, yes, I would take him mate. Better player imo than he gets credit for.

Comment #47I like Arma but whether he will make it, is another matter. I think we should have kept him this season and given him a chance. As I don’t think he is going to be used much next season if Rafa buys another striker.
My friend watches the reserves quite a bit and has said Tom Heardman (not sure of spelling) is a great prospect.

No worries about missing my message. My fault for being so slow to react. Maybe next time you’re in those parts? 😀

Comment #49If anybody can get Luc as to design it would be Rafa. He strengthens Liverpool’s midfield every time he plays and would be good for young Hayden to learn from. You need a bit of steel in midfield for certain games and he would provide that. A massive upgrade on Colback Lee, that’s for sure.

i’m a first time poster, but having been following this blog for 5 years plus. I can’t stop the impulse to comment on this article because I think that Adam Armstrong is the best prospect we’ve had since Gazza.
I don’t say this lightly, because Gascoigne is the reason why I fell in love with Nufc and their supporters back in 1987-88 as a brainwashed 15 year old Liverpool fan! Am I the only poster (apart from bobby bee) who doesn’t see the skill, ability (proven and in potential) this young man has?! I’m no football expert, or an armchair football manager player, but isn’t Armstrong tailor made for a Shelvey type midfielder who looks for a forward to run the channels and look for space? This season would’ve been ideal for Armstrong to prove himself at this level with a team that plays to his strengths, not an up and under team like Barnsley? I’m not questioning Rafa’s judgement (who is unquestionably the third best manager we’ve had in our history) but, I personally think he’s made a mistake in not giving him a chance in the championship
