With the transfer prices likely to be sky-high this summer it looks on the surface to be a daunting task for Rafa Benitez and Lee Charnley to do the job they have to do this summer and bring in up to eight good players who can be starters for the side next season in the Premier League.
We will have to pay top dollar for some players, but Lee and Rafa were (very) good last summer at getting some bargain deals and they will need to do the same this summer, if we are to get the number of good players we need to fight it out in the upper half of the Premier League table next season.
But there are always opportunities arise during the summer transfer market that are unexpected and Newcastle could hopefully get some players that way this summer.
The two men in the spotlight this summer
Managing Director Lee Charnley and manager Rafa Benitez
The did very well last summer!
Rafa has talked about his previous experience of these opportunities in ChronicleLive today:
“It depends on a lot of things, but sometimes you can find a player that you don’t expect that you can sign because the circumstances are right.”
“When I went to Napoli, they had a lot of Italian players and then we brought in Gonzalo] Higuain, Pepe Reina, so sometimes you can have access to players if the conditions are right.”
“In football, especially at this level, if you talk about Premier League and it’s the last game of the season and we are mid-table, the majority of them will know that maybe they will stay here.”
“But in this case, because it’s another level, some of our players they are not stupid and they know: ‘Maybe it’s my last chance.’”
“But at the same time they will think that: ‘We are promoted and I was part of this winning team.’”
“So I think it’s a positive approach more than a negative.”
Rafa is referring there to some players who were new and not regular players last season like Achraf Lazaar, Jesus Gamez, Grant Hanley and Daryl Murphy and that could be the end of the road this summer and they could be sold and the transfer fees used to bring in new players this summer.
And most but not all of the players out on loan for the season will have no future at Newcastle and will be sold this summer to get more funds to invest in new players.
They will be sold if possible or loaned out again to at least keep their wages off the wage bill.
It’s going to be very exciting for Newcastle fans this summer and we are already upbeat about what a great summer of transfer market activity it can be for Newcastle.
It’s something we were only dreaming about at the beginning of last August that we could get to this position – but we made it!
But we should also remember and remain cognizant and maybe even patient of the fact that it will be very difficult for Rafa and Lee.
But we have great confidence they will again get the job done for the club this summer.
Hope so.
🙂

Comment #121Is anyone watching the hull game? Decided to stick this on in the background so I can see maguire and Robertson again. Robertson started well and I think we really should target him for the lb position.

what did P45 ever win?
and its great to say i have a type, but going back in time, Rafas name wasnt on the table, and again if you spend the time you will see i said many top managers would want to work at SJP under Ashley, becasue we are a big club.
and i was more than prepared to take a chance on a young up and coming manager,, isnt that what southamton do?

Pardew was with us for 4 years with minimal investment and players sales our of his hands yet was able to stay in the league…McClaren very much got backed had no one sold out from under him and successfully ruined a squad capable of comfortable mid table in favour of sending us down
Ur manager choices were crap, I cant be bothered to go into more detail than that tbh

Comment #129Catchy…I wont answer for Jail, as not all who don’t like Ashley view all things the same way.
You may well remember that I haven’t always been anti-Ashley, I was in fact one of the most annoyingly pro-Ashley posters for a good while (so yeah, basically, ignore everything I say… 🙂 ).
I never objected to the idea of the blueprint we were sold. I even admire the idea of being self sufficient (although it’s now significantly easier with the leagues tv money). Where I changed was the fact it was a lie and was used to beat down an entire fan base.
For the first time in a long time, I can see the possibility of us finding a balance between a business and a footballing model, so why would I object?
There are still areas in which I think Ashley is bad news. In every area, other than tv money, our commercial income has decreased. So much for being a top business man. Asset stripping, etc.
It was a source of great amusement for some, the name “Ashley Out”. For me, it always meant enough is enough, we want change. Time4change was a better name imo, but fans didn’t want to participate at that time, so when Ashley Out started rolling, why be pedantic?
You say you slate Ashley, I know Jail has slated Pardew. You both should take less extreme views towards each other imo, but I wont be holding my breath.
