In some of the articles written lately on this blog I said maybe Newcastle were worth around £300M now we are back in the Premier League with a world-class manager in Rafa Benitez.
But I may have to think again, because Kieran Maguire, who is a lecturer on football finance at Liverpool University, has come up with an estimate of the 20 Premier League clubs based on their accounts for the last financial year – 2015/2016.
So these are for the financial year through 30th June last year.
Newcastle United are valued at £568.2M based on the way Maguire has estimated the value of the clubs.
The estimates are for the Premier League clubs for season 2015-2016 – when we were relegated – but did have Rafa Benitez as the manager.
Not sure how much we were worth in the last year in the second division – certainly not £568.2M.
Obviously Kieran Maguire didn’t take into account we were a second division side in May last year.
But since we are back in the Premier League and will have increased revenues next year compared to the 2015-2016 financial year – we may currently be worth even more than the Maguire estimate of £568.2M.
Here are Kevin Maguire’s estimates:
- £2.297B: Manchester City
- £2.232B: Manchester United
- £1.265B: Arsenal
- £1.151B: Tottenham
- £1.050B: Chelsea
- £589.3M: Liverpool
- £568.2M Newcastle
- £376.4M: Leicester City
- £248.3M Southampton
- £249.5M: Norwich
- £229.5M: Stoke City
- £211.1M: Everton
- £169.7M: Crystal Palace
- £166.8M: Bournemouth
- £161.8m: West Brom
- £161.7M: Aston Villa
- £148M: West Ham
- £131.7M: Sunderland
- £125M: Watford
- £113.5M: Swansea City
It’s very difficult to estimate what a club is worth on the open market, but with the new £5.1B TV rights deal clicking in this season. it’s not surprising the PL clubs’ values will have increased based on their increased revenues.
The fact the PL clubs are also seen regularly around the world on TV in what is the most popular sports league in the world will also help.
We are listed there as the 7th most valuable club in terms of worth in the Premier League so we probably need to finish at least 7th in the league next year?
And notice there’s almost a £200M difference in valuation between 7th and 8th place.
Sunderland are valued at £131.7M in 18th place.
This is also something that Rafa can add to his blueprint before he meets with Mike Ashley this week.
🙂
It will be interesting if Kieran Maguire does his estimates at the end of next season for the financial year ending June 20th 2018, how much Newcastle United would be worth.
It’s got to be more than the current figure.
We are back in the big time.
What do you think?

My last on it. Logic was flawed.
Stay mid table in Prem. Keep bringing in 4-5 Mill players we could sell for 20.
Worst thing we ever did was buy Cabaye for 4 and sell for 20. Encouraged them to think we could keep doing it. We did actually another couple of times, but in the process we also signed the Rivieres of this world who are still a drain on the club.
Remember years ago when that lot down the road signed Kevin Philips for 250K. They thought great do that another 5 or 6 times and we are up there.
You’ll do that once in a generation of players if you are lucky.

If Rafa signs a player such as them who are highly rated abroad he has already created a domestic core of players who can help them settle in and get used to the country and the league which it might mean we can get the best out of them.
Be an interesting summer thats for sure !

Comment #44Big money can but doesn’t always guarantee success:
Top four:
Owen 16, flop
Shearer 15, success
Wijnaldum 14.5, success mixed with failure
Mitrovic 13, still raw
On the flip side, examples, though old!
Lee .7
Beardsley 1.4
Ginola 2.5
Solano 2.5

Very true! I think there will be bargains to be had this summer it just might be the wages everyone will now want!
Rafa does have a great record of signing players around the 10 million mark mind you although those players will probably be 15 or 20 now

Comment #50Personally I think people are worrying too much about the price of players and who we will and won’t get. We have a decent core of players every bit as good as Watford, Bournemoth and Soton when they went up and of course a better manager than all three, unless people are expecting automatic top six we’ll be alright. I wonder how long it will take the Rafa bashers to feel safe enough to start slating him again. It’s been awfully quiet from kimbo, W Lancs Geordie and the like. I wonder why that is. I really do, most people post when things are good or bad, why do certain posters only come on to have a dig when they feel the time is right.

I personally feel our core team is good enough to survive no bother I dont see West Brom as having a much better team than us at the moment so a few match winners bought for us at left wing and no 10 would start to see us catch up quite quickly
Knowing Rafa he will be looking at maybe 5 or 6 that should bring us close to top 10 next season

Too simplistic. Post Bosman the buying club need to factor into their thinking the likely re- sale value of any purchase. This is not just consideration of a players age but the implication of European players seeking higher wages because of fall in the value of the-pound. Much criticism of Ashley in January for not sanctioning transfers in but the pound has subsequently strengthened and his action or inaction has received the endorsement of Daniel Levy who knows all about working the market.

Comment #56JFA @ 50. I have said the same thing before, and have people slag me off. I really think our current squad just needs 3 or 4 players for Mid Table, and whilst I would like to see us aim for the top I think we cannot compete financially with the big boys just now, so there isn’t much point. Besides, I can’t see MA shelling out 100+ Million, on the risk of another relegation battle, with the prospect of big long contracts hanging over the players. That just would not be typical MA behaviour. I expect to see some incoming, and outgoing, and a fair bit of outlay, just nowhere near the figures being bandied about on wish-lists.

Comment #57Shite, I just realized with Borough and mackems getting relegated our closest Derby match next year would be BURNLEY. I know I’m happy as shite, especially after last year with the mackems giving Newcastle shit for getting relegated and now they have been. But honestly, not really having a Derby Match is a little upsetting. There is something in the season that makes the Derby Match give you that Toon Pride a little bit more.

I have to agree with Carl, when you consider in 1995 when we got Ginola, we sold Andy Cole for a British record £7mil. I’ve had a quick google search to fins out what that would be in todays market, all I can find is up to 2015. That £7mil would in todays terms equate to approx £44mil.
If any club was to go out to buy a 23year old that’s is going to score a goal almost every game now how much are they going to have to pay? Would you get Harry Kane for £44million?

Comment #60It is a moot point for a number of reasons whether this current squad would be good enough to hold their own in the PL. Personally I think we could as how much did Wijnaldum, Jaanmat etc contribute to our upturn in form at the end of last season. However if we didn’t add to the squad at all then the blow to morale would be too much to overcome and we’d slide. We will most definitely add quality so it really is a moot point.

Comment #62This is by far the worst squad I’ve seen for a long time. 6-8 decent signings will be needed in the Summer. Even our so called player of the season Ritchie was pretty hopeless for the first half of the season. Shelvey would be my player of the season, amazed he didn’t get more votes, but even he was never a regular in the Premiership. Defence not my biggest concern although we will need to strengthen, but in midfield and up front we are in urgent need of some quality players.

Best ever Championship?
Have to disagree with that, a lot of the teams we played were pretty woeful.
The last squad we had in the Championship was much better than this one in my opinion.

Comment #66@65, I would disagree very strongly with that mate, The competition is now a hell of a lot stronger than it was when we were last here. Our team now is a lot better in my opinion than the team Hoots walked it with. That’s just an opinion by the way, so there is no way I can prove it.

We might of had a better squad last time, it still doesn’t make it the worst we have seen for a long time, for starters it is not filled with want away “stars” who have no respect at all for the club or fans. Last time down we had players who wouldn’t leave, if Mash had his way Enrique, Collo, Barton would have all been gone.

Comment #68Going back to the Yaya thread…when I saw an article on SSN app that he was leaving Citeh I initially though, he could be a good buy for a season! If he’d take a wage cut and a yearly rolling contract I think it would be a decent signing. I too have been one saying Cesc would be a brilliant signing, but dont see him leaving London. Musa is said to be leaving Leicester, not sure what wage he’s on, but his pace would be welcome in our squad dont you think?

Comment #69Have to agree though the last championship squad was way better than this one. We walked it last time, can’t say we did this year, only the variable quality of the front runners made sure we stayed up there IMO.

Congratulations to the team and staff and a massive thanks to the best manager we have had since we had the great, late Sir Bobby. He has the place buzzing again and I can’t wait to see who we sign.
I hope Ashley backs him. We can be that sleeping giant that has woken up.

What about those 2 Croatian lads we were supposed to have bid for? All speculation of course
On the championship debate last time we got outplayed in quite a lot of games and then boom Carroll or Nolan would get a goal and the other teams confidence would drop we had players who were a bit more streetwise as well!We also didn’t play that good football either that season it was very effective mind you
We have a young team at the moment who done well to overcome playing against 14 men every week and insane pressure to get promoted at the first time of asking this experience will do them a lot of good for next season

The romantic notion is that they wanted to stay ie Damien Duff who claimed is loyalty until Fulham came in and offered him the same. Last time down the squad and manager came together by default as the owner flapped around trying to have a firesale. This time round we had players who were very willing to leave and did. Do you think Townsend would have took a paycut for “footballing” reasons..
