With Rafa getting agreement from owner Mike Ashley that he will give him every penny he can in the summer transfer window and that Rafa can use money from players he can sell this summer Rafa’s summer clear out will likely be bigger than first thought – and that was quite massive.
There are a number of players whose contracts come to an end on June 30th and maybe Rafa will not even take up the option of signing Christian Atsu from Chelsea for a measly £6.5M, but we hope he does.
If we are reading the tea leaves correctly we think Rafa got a lot of money promised from Ashley and that he can now move to release players he doesn’t need and they could even include Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran, although again we hope Rafa gives them new deals and they can be squad players.
Two men who will be very very busy this summer
Lee Charnley and Rafa Benitez
So it’s time to update our lists on which players could be sold and if not sold then sent out on loan for next season to at least get their wages off the wage bill.
Here’s a list of players who could be let go this summer – one way or another:
- Florian Thauvin – sell to Marseille for £10M
- Henri Saivet – sell if possible £3M
- Emmanuel Riviere – sell if possible £2M
- Kevin Mbabu – sell if possible £1M
- Haris Vuckic – contact will not be renewed – compensation due
- Sammy Ameobi – contact will not be renewed – compensation due
- Achraf Lazaar – sell if possible £3M
- Jesus Gamez – sell if possible £1M
- Matz Sels – sell if possible £5M
- Massadio Haidara – sell if possible £2M
- Daryl Murphy – sell if possible £2M
- Siem de Jong – sell if possible £5M
- Tim Krul – sell if possible – Rafa likely to bring in new first team goalkeeper £7M (difficult to judge fee given his injury)
- Chancel Mbemba – sell if possible £10M
- Grant Hanley – sell if possible £6M
We have put approximate transfer fees next to those who could be sold and that adds up to £57M but in today’s inflated transfer market it could be a lot more.
And then there are question marks about these three players as we mentioned earlier:
- Vurnon Anita – will he get new contract?
- Yoan Gouffran – – will he get new contract?
- Christian Atsu – will loan deal be made permanent?
Note that when we sell players other clubs usually pay for them over a number of years – usually three – so we will not get that full amount in cash this summer.
But arrangements will have been made that Rafa can use the full £57M – or whatever he can get in the transfer market this summer.
What do you think about this?
Comments welcome.

sorry mate but you’re overplaying the number of fans that have been there all there lives
times have changed and fans now come and go as theirs and the clubs circumstances change

Comment #85Agree with Bobbybee that prices shouldn’t increase for the loyal fans. By all means put the prices up for new customers but don’t make us another Man U where the working class fan is getting pushed out because they cant afford it

Comment #87WW – I know survival is our first priority but I honestly believe rafa will aim higher and achieve it. I’m not getting carried away.
I get we have plenty of keepers and agree we gave some good ones. I also agree other areas need priority but I think rafa covers every base and will raise the spine as priority.
I don’t think we will start the season with one of our current keepers in the starting xi.
The way he’s talking reads like the hard work will be both getting the players in/out and then developing the team spirit quickly. I’d say that sounds like large scale change. Especially finding leaders so we don’t fall apart when we are up against the top 6.
The players I picked don’t necessarily gel but have the experience, talent and leadership to do that.
I very much doubt I picked anything like what we will finally see but I’m hoping it’s along those lines of quality.
Aim high and you might not hit that height but you won’t hit it for sure if you aim low.

Comment #88My ST is now less than it was eight years ago. There’s a reason for that. Is yours jail? Silly me. 🙂 Double the price won’t make a huge difference to funds. Not even a decent player. Fact. Like I said, we went down to 46k average when it was bad. So that’s six thousand, plus the 15k waiting list. My oh my, where are those 21k fans? Oh look, here they all come running back now. 🙂
I’ll get there anywhere. Be a struggle but I’d find it. I know others who simply could not. Short term vision is what got the club in the mess it was in. And yes, I know you thought it was all just Ashley – you always do. He can do no right in your eyes ffs. But he kept football affordable for the working classes and that’s why crowds kept up to a reasonable size. Good on him I say! 🙂

what do you class as loyal fans the season ticket holder or the lad who walks up and pays at the gate every week
my opinion No price rise for anyone or a price rise for everyone is the only way
no good creating a 2 tier price system season tickets are complicated enough as it is

Comment #90NUFCadon, glad you agree mate. I’ve been going all my life and know many many more just the same. Even those only by sight. They’re the fans who matter imo. Not bothered about those who come and go depending on success. You look after the core support because they’ll be there even if we dropped into Division One.

Haha of course it getting carried away we all are but if it not a town fan u won’t be seeing an ambitious club is see a potentially ambitious one and that’s not a risk established players need to take this summer. I mean we’d have Rafa just over a year and he’s seriously considered his position twice in that time
I agree we need quality but imo it’ll be quality we’ve not heard of or players who need to move and Rafa can talk round

Comment #94Anyone who wants to increase ticket prices is nuts.
We pay far more than supporters in Germany/Italy etc.
4 less games for your money next season.
TV money is the main earner.
I’ve got a great seat. With my Metro Mover keeping travel costs down I went last year for less than £20 a game.
That’s how it should be, in fact I think it should come down to £15 a game.

Comment #95Yeah I know there was a 10 year freeze, I thought that was great. I get that there are fans that come and pay as and when they are free but they have to pay the market rate, they know that’s the risk of not having the season ticket. I think it would be a real shame to lose fans who have been going for years because of a price increase

Comment #96Half of Carr’s disasters won’t get us a penny – thats IF we even manage to get rid of them. Some, like Murphy I thank for his great efforts on our behalf.
The rest I can’t see the back of soon enough. Thauvin, Rivierre, Hadeira, Saivet – all disasters

Comment #100Am I the only one who thinks mbabu should be given a go?! Looked very promising last season and is still young and also adds some pace defensively and attackingly
