Newcastle Reported After Expensive Portuguese Defender

Portuguese news outlet A Bola are reporting that Newcastle officials have made contact with Sporting Lisbon for 23 year-old Portuguese defender Ruben Semedo.

However, A Bola have not always been accurate in their reporting of players Newcastle are after.

The 6ft 2ins player has been with Sporting since 2009 and plays in central defense or as a defensive midfielder.

23 year-old Sporting Lisbon defender Ruben Semedo

In March of last year Semedo signed a new six year deal which is reported to have a release clause in it of €45M which in today’s exchange rate of 0.85 is about £38M.

Semedo came through the Sporting Youth Academy and this season he has been impressive and made 29 appearances for the first team.

Ruben has played for the Portuguese U20 (4 appearances) and U21 sides (6 appearances) and what makes his club think he is worth is worth £38M is a good question.

Of course clubs can put anything they want into a contract and if other clubs will not pay the release clause it doesn’t mean much.

Newcastle could still be interested in this player, but certainly not at £38M.

He has played 46 times for the Sporting Lisbon first time so far in his career.

There have been various reports earlier this year in various outlets in England that  Premier League clubs Southampton and Everton are interested in the player with the Saints having interest in him for over a year now.

This is the first time Newcastle are said to be interested in this player.

I know, its a laugh eh? There’s no chance we would sign Morgan now. Very nearly past it, especially for PL.
And the Toure link is just as ridiculous. He is visibly ebbing away, compared to the force he was a couple of years ago.

It’s the off season, so why not post this. Been watching Duran v Barkley. Best fight I’ve ever seen. Before the bout a journalist asked Duran’s trainer if it was true that the pre fight medical had indicated that Duran was suffering from an irregular heartbeat. His trainer replied “yeah, that’s not possible. Roberto doesn’t have a heart”.

If you get a chance watch it, you won’t regret it. Barkley is excellent, but Duran is just remorseless.

There’s still a chance to see Fat Sam get a slap in his quivering jowls. Come on Hull today. Top off the season for me.

I see Liverpool have won race for robertson according to the mirror and they want maguire too.
I like maguire a lot. Robertson not so much.
Good centre backs are as rare and hard to obtain as top quality strikers if not harder. I hope rafa can work his magic and get the right men in. It would be great to go into the season with a well balanced side that rafa rates highly..
