Newcastle Make First Signing Of The Summer

Sky Sports are reporting that Newcastle have taken up the option on Chelsea winger Christian Atsu and have agreed to sign the Ghanaian International for £6.2M and he becomes Rafa’s first signing of the summer.

Fans will be pleased the club have taken up the option on Christian, who has become a popular player on Tyneside and just loved his season on loan last season and was very keen to make the move permanent.

We think Atsu will be delighted to sign permanently for the Tyneside club in a four year deal.

Christian Atsu – always smiling

Christian appeared 35 times for Newcastle last season with 16 starts and 5 goals and he showed the class that Rafa Benitez wants to bring into the club for our season back in the Premier League.

In the poll we ran on Christian, four fans in five wanted the club to sign him permanently.

Should Benitez Sign Christian Atsu Permanently

  • Yes (83%, 2,502 Votes)
  • No (17%, 496 Votes)

Total Voters: 2,998

Christian will be a very good signing for Newcastle and he can only get better under Rafa’s excellent coaching and man-management.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

This player for 6 million?! Sign him now!

Hope Rafa wraps it all up (5-6 first teamers) ASAP and we aren’t waiting for some big signings in the middle of preseason.

BTW, hope we don’t do a big tournament. Key matches here and there, yes. Conditioning, tactics and a fun destination like Cyprus, yes.

Rafa, good signing, but it don’t count 😉

Apparently we’re interested in Boudebouz from Montpellier.

Attacking midfielder who got 11 goals and 9 assists in 27 games in a ‘struggling team’. He’s 27 but could be interesting. Although I’m not convinced on French players anymore.

Woohoo! buzzing with this signing, Rafa obviously believes in him.

Good signing for me if this is true….adds pace and creativity to the side… and if we were to start lookin abroad for a player to play the same position i believe for similar quality would cost a lot more money and would take time to adjust…. yes he has his off games but they all do.

That’s atsu i was referring to…..bit wary of talented french based players after cabella and thauvin….talented players just not suited to english football.

    Good signing for me Atsu.

Good price and I think he can do the job even at Prem level.

I know he didnt really light the Championship up but I dont think being in and out helped him. We saw what he could do when he finally got a run of games at the end.

I’ve been to a fair few games this season that he has changed by coming on and being a bit more direct and wanting to beat a man and have also watched him play at international level where I think he shows how good he can be.

As for Jay Rodriguez. i wouldve been chuffed a few years back but I dont think he’s ever fully come back from his injury. It’s a shame as there was a time where he had as much potential as Adam Lallana

Apologies for not replying sooner about Mooy.

He is certainly highly rated over here and a mainstsy in our national team. He has been outstanding for Huddersfield this season but I worry how he would go in the PL and I see him more as a back up to Shelvey than a replacement.

I would prefer to get a more seasoned and PL experienced campaigner as I see this position being the crucial position to be filled.

I am not convinced by Shelvey as the main man so it would be a no for me for Mooy.

Rodriguez is a non starter….far to much money on one player…and to be honest would he even give us a second thought….. seriously doubt it.
Hopefully we see a few players coming in that rafa has been working on b4 the season finished but we wont know about them or be confirmed for a while yet…. patience required and dampened expectations about who we will sign….then if we do make a big signing, its a nice surprise.

Atsu has pace, something you need in the premiership. He also has some skills that Rafa will no doubt tweak and improve in him, and for around £6m I think it’s a bargain.

Agree about atsu, especially for that money….i would like to mooy come in,good player, keeps the ball well and has the ability to see a pass or get a shot away….and would keep shelvey honest, knowing theres a like-for-like in the squad is a good motivator to play at ya best…and once again for the money…10m i believe…i think its a good deal….if it comes off.

Former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is reportedly in line for a return to management at Sheffield Wednesday – regardless of which division the Owls find themselves in next season.

Carlos Carvalhal has guided Wednesday into the Championship play-offs for the second consecutive season, and they secured a 0-0 draw at Huddersfield Town in their semi-final first leg on Sunday.

Even though Wednesday could yet navigate that semi-final second leg and then even achieve promotion, The Daily Mail claims that Pardew is being lined up as Carvalhal’s replacement.

In the report, it is stated that there is “strong belief that Carvalhal’s fate has already been sealed,” despite the fact he signed a three-year contract 12 months ago.

I see the Atsu signing (when confirmed) as a replacement and upgrade on Goufrann, who will not almost certainly be replaced.

Mooy is decent, wouldn’t mind him coming, and for the money another decent deal, but I would have hoped for a player who would be better than Shelvey so they could push each other all the way for a starting position.

Still we have to believe that Rafa knows what he is doing, who he wants and what their role in the squad would be.

It’s great though that we can now look forward to a season, regardless knowing we have a manager we can trust.

Siem de Jong in a conversation with a PSV fan

“It is agreed that I will return to Newcastle United after the season. I see it as a challenge to prove myself in their preseason.
If the trainer just says he is looking for someone else, that will be another story.
Last year, coach Rafael Benitez indicated that he could use me, but he was also planning to turn the team around. For me it was especially important to get fit and play a lot to progress . “

On Mooy, I totally agree. Good player but jntested as yet at PL level. Could be worth taking on loan with a view to buy if someone better cannot be found.

I’m more than happy that we’ve signed Atsu. Will only get better imo. As the last 3 games of this season showed. He was consistent and bagged 2 goals. One of which was a sublime free kick.

Ideally we want better then what we have already but we have to consider these better players will be a hell of a lot more money then the likes of mooy….money, right now… we need to strengthen the whole squad….if we survive and money becomes available we can start tweaking the squad… adding a class midfielder and striker but unless we can fluke a bargain player who is a sensation i think slowly, slowly catchy monkey for now….we wont be signing many if any players over 20m…which is how much the better players will cost.

The two times Mooy played against us.

At SJP in August Rafa was still experimenting and Huddersfield showed their Championship experience in surprising us with their 2-0 win .
Mooy pretty much showed Shelvey how it should be done.

Away a couple of months ago we beat them fairly easily 3-1 and the much maligned Jack Colback who hadn’t played in the first game harried Mooy all game and the Aussie hardly had a meaningful touch of the ball (penalty aside)

    Downside he’s 33
Captain of last years PL champions
    Knows Lascelles double well
    Hell of a physical specimen
Ranieri cited him as his right arm on the pitch
    Short contract could work.

Atsu – not a world beater but for £6m a decent addition to the squad – he can certainly change a game when coming on as a sub.

Not over excited about Atsu. He played well -offensively – in the last couple of games but seemed not to know what to do when they opposition were attacking down his flank.
Apart from being a midget (won’t head much) – his technicals skills seem ok.
I hope Rafa can bring him on – a lot – otherwise he’s gonna be an expensive bench warmer.
Not appropriate to compare him and Gouffran I think!

Mooy for £10m is a steal, no brainer. Untested at PL level but came in for his first season in England and tore a very tough competition apart in a solid but average team. Bring him in to a much classier NUFC and his abilities will shine more and he will want to prove himself as a premier league player.

Yes I believe we still need more but regardless would want NUFC to make that purchase if possible

Ryad Boudebouz would be a epic signing if this is true, him and SDJ can battle for their places but I think Ryad would dominate his role with his creativity.

But would Rafa have him as a forward playmaker in AMC he can assist and score goals so having pacey players like Atsu,Ritchie and Gayle around him but suit him down to the bone.

I know they’re different positions, but how can Mooy (brilliant in Australlia, one of best players in championship) cost £10m, and Atsu (4 years of total failure on various loans, just managed to oust the terrible Gouffran in championship, and had a couple of decent games when playing for contract) cost £6+ million?
Chelsea only paid about 3 for him, so how come when he was 24 after such failed loans, did his value go to 6? We negotiated that price before he even played for us – seemingly the only decent games he’s had in his career.
