Newcastle Make First Signing Of The Summer

Sky Sports are reporting that Newcastle have taken up the option on Chelsea winger Christian Atsu and have agreed to sign the Ghanaian International for £6.2M and he becomes Rafa’s first signing of the summer.

Fans will be pleased the club have taken up the option on Christian, who has become a popular player on Tyneside and just loved his season on loan last season and was very keen to make the move permanent.

We think Atsu will be delighted to sign permanently for the Tyneside club in a four year deal.

Christian Atsu – always smiling

Christian appeared 35 times for Newcastle last season with 16 starts and 5 goals and he showed the class that Rafa Benitez wants to bring into the club for our season back in the Premier League.

In the poll we ran on Christian, four fans in five wanted the club to sign him permanently.

Should Benitez Sign Christian Atsu Permanently

  • Yes (83%, 2,502 Votes)
  • No (17%, 496 Votes)

Total Voters: 2,998

Christian will be a very good signing for Newcastle and he can only get better under Rafa’s excellent coaching and man-management.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

This player for 6 million?! Sign him now!

Hope Rafa wraps it all up (5-6 first teamers) ASAP and we aren’t waiting for some big signings in the middle of preseason.

BTW, hope we don’t do a big tournament. Key matches here and there, yes. Conditioning, tactics and a fun destination like Cyprus, yes.

Rafa, good signing, but it don’t count 😉

Apparently we’re interested in Boudebouz from Montpellier.

Attacking midfielder who got 11 goals and 9 assists in 27 games in a ‘struggling team’. He’s 27 but could be interesting. Although I’m not convinced on French players anymore.

Woohoo! buzzing with this signing, Rafa obviously believes in him.

Good signing for me if this is true….adds pace and creativity to the side… and if we were to start lookin abroad for a player to play the same position i believe for similar quality would cost a lot more money and would take time to adjust…. yes he has his off games but they all do.

    Good signing for me Atsu.

Good price and I think he can do the job even at Prem level.

I know he didnt really light the Championship up but I dont think being in and out helped him. We saw what he could do when he finally got a run of games at the end.

I’ve been to a fair few games this season that he has changed by coming on and being a bit more direct and wanting to beat a man and have also watched him play at international level where I think he shows how good he can be.

As for Jay Rodriguez. i wouldve been chuffed a few years back but I dont think he’s ever fully come back from his injury. It’s a shame as there was a time where he had as much potential as Adam Lallana

Apologies for not replying sooner about Mooy.

He is certainly highly rated over here and a mainstsy in our national team. He has been outstanding for Huddersfield this season but I worry how he would go in the PL and I see him more as a back up to Shelvey than a replacement.

I would prefer to get a more seasoned and PL experienced campaigner as I see this position being the crucial position to be filled.

I am not convinced by Shelvey as the main man so it would be a no for me for Mooy.

Hopefully we see a few players coming in that rafa has been working on b4 the season finished but we wont know about them or be confirmed for a while yet…. patience required and dampened expectations about who we will sign….then if we do make a big signing, its a nice surprise.

Atsu has pace, something you need in the premiership. He also has some skills that Rafa will no doubt tweak and improve in him, and for around £6m I think it’s a bargain.

    http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/how-ex-newcastle-boss-alan-13042208

Former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is reportedly in line for a return to management at Sheffield Wednesday – regardless of which division the Owls find themselves in next season.

Carlos Carvalhal has guided Wednesday into the Championship play-offs for the second consecutive season, and they secured a 0-0 draw at Huddersfield Town in their semi-final first leg on Sunday.

Even though Wednesday could yet navigate that semi-final second leg and then even achieve promotion, The Daily Mail claims that Pardew is being lined up as Carvalhal’s replacement.

In the report, it is stated that there is “strong belief that Carvalhal’s fate has already been sealed,” despite the fact he signed a three-year contract 12 months ago.

Mooy is decent, wouldn’t mind him coming, and for the money another decent deal, but I would have hoped for a player who would be better than Shelvey so they could push each other all the way for a starting position.

Still we have to believe that Rafa knows what he is doing, who he wants and what their role in the squad would be.

It’s great though that we can now look forward to a season, regardless knowing we have a manager we can trust.

Siem de Jong in a conversation with a PSV fan

“It is agreed that I will return to Newcastle United after the season. I see it as a challenge to prove myself in their preseason.
If the trainer just says he is looking for someone else, that will be another story.
Last year, coach Rafael Benitez indicated that he could use me, but he was also planning to turn the team around. For me it was especially important to get fit and play a lot to progress . “

Ideally we want better then what we have already but we have to consider these better players will be a hell of a lot more money then the likes of mooy….money, right now… we need to strengthen the whole squad….if we survive and money becomes available we can start tweaking the squad… adding a class midfielder and striker but unless we can fluke a bargain player who is a sensation i think slowly, slowly catchy monkey for now….we wont be signing many if any players over 20m…which is how much the better players will cost.

The two times Mooy played against us.

At SJP in August Rafa was still experimenting and Huddersfield showed their Championship experience in surprising us with their 2-0 win .
Mooy pretty much showed Shelvey how it should be done.

Away a couple of months ago we beat them fairly easily 3-1 and the much maligned Jack Colback who hadn’t played in the first game harried Mooy all game and the Aussie hardly had a meaningful touch of the ball (penalty aside)

Not over excited about Atsu. He played well -offensively – in the last couple of games but seemed not to know what to do when they opposition were attacking down his flank.
Apart from being a midget (won’t head much) – his technicals skills seem ok.
I hope Rafa can bring him on – a lot – otherwise he’s gonna be an expensive bench warmer.
Not appropriate to compare him and Gouffran I think!

Mooy for £10m is a steal, no brainer. Untested at PL level but came in for his first season in England and tore a very tough competition apart in a solid but average team. Bring him in to a much classier NUFC and his abilities will shine more and he will want to prove himself as a premier league player.

Ryad Boudebouz would be a epic signing if this is true, him and SDJ can battle for their places but I think Ryad would dominate his role with his creativity.

But would Rafa have him as a forward playmaker in AMC he can assist and score goals so having pacey players like Atsu,Ritchie and Gayle around him but suit him down to the bone.

I know they’re different positions, but how can Mooy (brilliant in Australlia, one of best players in championship) cost £10m, and Atsu (4 years of total failure on various loans, just managed to oust the terrible Gouffran in championship, and had a couple of decent games when playing for contract) cost £6+ million?
Chelsea only paid about 3 for him, so how come when he was 24 after such failed loans, did his value go to 6? We negotiated that price before he even played for us – seemingly the only decent games he’s had in his career.

I agree that Atsu is the replacement and an upgrade on Gouffran. He can learn the defensive side of things and has the pace and ability to take defenders on which Gouffran never did. Gouffran could finish, but we’ll need more pace on the wings than he can offer next season in the Prem as we’ll likely need to score on counter-attacks in many of our matches and Gouffran isn’t the winger for that. Atsu also has the benefit of being able to be on either flank and that will add to our flexibility which is nice.

A key part of this is that he won’t need time to settle into the side as he has already played for a season with the team – all other signings will need to find their feet which can take a while. Although I’d like higher quality players in than Atsu, signing him as our 3rd winger is a smart move IMHO (behind Ritchie and another winger singing).

I trust Rafa completely, also Murphy when he was signed people once again were like, he is so old why did Rafa sign him. If I remember he did score some crucial goals for us. Something we have tried to avoid in the past with some coming here and not getting game time. Have total faith in Rafa.

Happy to see Atsu rewarded with a permanent deal. At 6.3M or whatever this is not a lot of cash in today’s PL. Also there won’t be pressure to have him start. He’ll have to earn it with his play and not worry about a large transfer fee to justify.

SPringy @ 12 above – Perhaps you are joking and referring to James Rodriguez – while we are being linked with Jay Rodriguez for 6M. Mind you Rafa did work with James for most of a season. Maybe he’ll be happy to link up with Rafa 😉

Atsu strikes me as a Sub you throw on for the last 30 minutes, especially if you’re behind.

He’s not as gifted creatively as most top tier offensive players in the EPL, which is why chelsea are ok with him leaving

in some ways he’s your prototypical Carr signing..He’s competent with both left and right feet & comes at a discounted price

I am really interested to see if we make a big splash in the search for a legit #10. I would like to see us land Siggurdson but with Swans staying up any relegation clause will be void. Also rumor is that Everton want him BUT that means that Barkley could be out the door. It would take a big fee to land either, 25M-30M range, but this the class that makes a difference.

Failing either of those two, I think a cheeky bid to Man Utd for Mata could be a fun thing to do. I think he could still play the 10 and be very effective at it for a couple more seasons.

Who knows, but it is fun to speculate – even long shot speculation.

    mike…
Of course we are dreaming when some of us mention Mata or Sigurdsson!!! 🙂

  • mikeashleyisamackem
    May 16, 2017 at 7:06 PM

    We’ll be realistic
Am dreaming of Ronaldo but it’s not gonna happen

  • Toonces
    May 16, 2017 at 7:06 PM

MAIAM – Mata gets messed around with by Mou. And in the current financial world of the PL, 100k/w salaries for good players is going to become the going rate.

And yes, I acknowledge this might be out there in dreamland but I don’t think it is that crazy.

Now James Rodriguez would be crazy. Mata not so much.

  • Toonces
    May 16, 2017 at 7:07 PM

Chico – good shouts and I have seen you mention them before. Cheers!

  • mikeashleyisamackem
    May 16, 2017 at 7:07 PM

Mata will be on 160 k a week

  • mikeashleyisamackem
    May 16, 2017 at 7:08 PM

    There is just no way

  • mikeashleyisamackem
    May 16, 2017 at 7:10 PM

He will also want 200 k to join Newcastle
And there will be clubs prepared to pay it
And Newcastle am afraid aren’t one of them

  • mikeashleyisamackem
    May 16, 2017 at 7:12 PM

Honestly if we had champions league then maybe
But otherwise there is just no way

  • Toonces
    May 16, 2017 at 7:12 PM

MAIAM – if that is the case then fair enough, but maybe the wage demand won’t be that high after a few seasons being shafted by Jose.

  • mikeashleyisamackem
    May 16, 2017 at 7:14 PM

Gylfi s will also be looking for a champions league club

  • Toonces
    May 16, 2017 at 7:15 PM

Gylfi won’t be in the PL next season then if that’s the case..

  • mikeashleyisamackem
    May 16, 2017 at 7:18 PM

    The players you mention
Nearly every club in the world would be interested
    More wages and champions league
    We can’t offer that yet
We need to be looking at players who are good players with bags of potential
The experienced players we could possibly get would be someone like Carrick nearing the end of his career
Not players who still have a major transfer contract in them

I like Mooy, not so much as an understudy to Shelvey, but alongside him. He has the physical presence and work rate to hold, and the passing and movement to give and go. Shelvey and Mooy, with Hayden and Colback providing the competition would give us enough in the middle of the park I think so long as we can also upgrade at ten and striker and left wing, and also add a bit defensively. Obviously you need to strengthen with a view to how the group will function as a whole. You are only as strong as your weakest link type of thing.

That’s how the mighty swans got to the premiership was by beating reading and i can say i was there in Wembley what an awesome day that was, couple of Stellas before and after the match.

Get the company cheque book out rafa. Cairney and sessegnon. Got to be worth going for.
How on earth reading are in the play off final I don’t know.
    Get mooy as well.
    Maguire.
    Give it a go.

  • SPRINGY
    May 16, 2017 at 10:28 PM

    Jimmy
Would be nice to not just be a 1 trick pony relying on shelvey to pull the strings…..if mooy did come and he played along side shelvey…i believe it could work but if shelveys having a mare u can swop things round and still have someone to string the passes and see opportunities for the right pass…..this season if shelvey was off the boil the whole team seemed to……just gives us options we didn’t have this season

  • jimmysmith
    May 16, 2017 at 10:35 PM

Yeah I agree. I think Mooy could both compete with and compliment Shelvey, and I think should Shelvey be unavailable, then Mooy/ Hayden or Mooy/Colback would also work, in a well balanced, well engineered, well prepared 11.

  • expatmag
    May 16, 2017 at 10:45 PM

    welshwum @126

    lets clear this up

you have never been to a football match your sole hobby in life is to destroy decent football blogs and to stop the elderly and pregnant women sitting in the designated seats at the front of busses its just a shame you can do both at the same time now due to busses having free wifi

  • magspuggy
    May 16, 2017 at 11:37 PM

Welsh, the sad fact is you’re always on Rafa’s back but you won’t ever hear a word said against your beloved Swansea.
Why are you so surprised that people on an NUFC blog are so mind-numbingly bored of you?

  • welshgeordie9
