Newcastle are interested in signing 27 year-old Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez,. who seems to be a £6M transfer target for Rafa Benitez.
Jay is a very good footballer but has never really scored a bevy of goals in his career and while at Southampton he has made 120 appearances and scored 34 goals over the last five seasons.
The former Burnley striker suffered a serious Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in April 2014 against Manchester City and some wonder if he is the same players since he sustained that injury.
Jay Rodriguez – 27 year-old Saints forward
But it doesn’t seem that Rafa Benitez is too worried about that and maybe at £6M, if Rafa can start to get the best out of him. he could be a very decent signing for Newcastle.
Newcastle have been linked with a number of strikers so far this year and it’s thought that Rafa wants to bring in two strikers this summer so that he has players who can take the many chances Newcastle seem to create.
Last season we dropped a lot of points because when we are on top in a number of our games we couldn’t kill the game off because we couldn’t convert the chances that were created.
Jay can play in various positions up front so he is versatile and Rafa wants to bring in players for almost all positions on the Newcastle team.
It also looks like 34 year-old Daryl Murphy will be sold this summer so we will have only Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic as strikers and Jay could fill that role up front if we sign him.
Jay seems a decent signing for just £6M and if Rafa wants him he must have seen something in him where he can use him at Newcastle and improve him as a player.
It seems as though Southampton are also willing to sell him this summer.
What do you think?

Comment #1This player for 6 million?! Sign him now!
Hope Rafa wraps it all up (5-6 first teamers) ASAP and we aren’t waiting for some big signings in the middle of preseason.
BTW, hope we don’t do a big tournament. Key matches here and there, yes. Conditioning, tactics and a fun destination like Cyprus, yes.

Comment #3Apparently we’re interested in Boudebouz from Montpellier.
Attacking midfielder who got 11 goals and 9 assists in 27 games in a ‘struggling team’. He’s 27 but could be interesting. Although I’m not convinced on French players anymore.

Comment #5The best value striker we should sign is Defoe from Sunderland. Its a no brainer hes on a free transfer and guarantees you at least 15 goals per season. He would be my first signing by a mile. Hope he comes.

Comment #6If he can get back to what he was like before the injury mayube, but he’s shown no sign of that. Always good to sign English lads though. makes a nice change
