We were very surprised when Newcastle were linked with Leicester City center-back Wes Morgan who is now 33 years old, although he’s had two very good seasons in central defense for his club over the last two seasons and has played extremely well.
Not sure why Rafa wants the player in other than to shore up the central defense but maybe he also wants the vastly experienced Wes in so that our younger center-backs like Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark can learn from him.
Wes has great leadership abilities, which is one reason Rafa may want him, but this is a test of owner Mike Ashley – who doesn’t usually like bringing in players whose value will only decrease at the club .
Wes Morgan – Rafa target could join Newcastle
But if we do sign Wes, it is a sign that Rafa is in full control and Mike Ashley is willing to let Benitez bring in players he thinks fit to make Newcastle into a much better side next season.
If we do sign Wes, it’s very likely he will be the new captain at the club too and will have a big role to play in the next few years.
The Mirror is reporting today that Morgan is tempted to make the move to Newcastle this summer, and join Rafa’s revolution.
The former Premier League Champions are now said to be looking at Hull City’s Harry Maguire as a replacement, who also happens to be a Newcastle target this summer.
Morgan joined Leicester from Nottingham Forest over five years ago and he’s been a huge success at the club.
Morgan is very rarely injured and is also a top-class professional having played 233 times for the Foxes with 10 goals and is also the Leicester City captain who led them to the Premier League title last season.
Rafa wants an experienced player in central defense to help out his young side and it seems a great chance for the 30 times Jamaican International to extend his career and help Rafa make Newcastle into a top side in Europe again.
This report is promising and of course Rafa is famous for able to persuade good players to join him.
This would be on odd signing for one so old, but we also know that Rafa knows exactly what he’s doing and he explains exactly why he wants players to sign and what he sees their role as at the club.
If this deal goes through then Mike Ashley is supporting Rafa big time – which would be very good and also reassuring.
Wes has played 640 first team games in his 15 seasons playing football, so that’s an amazing average of 42 appearances every single season.
