ESPN are reporting today that Rafa Benitez is keen on bringing 27-year-old Burnley striker Ashley  Barnes to Newcastle this summer to strengthen our strike force.

When we have watched Burnley  quite a few times this season  we’ve seen Barnes in action and maybe it’s just us, but we have been less than impressed.

Since he joined Burnley from Brighton back in 2014 after starting his career at Plymouth Argyle in 2007, he has scored 14 goals in 96 appearances so he’s not exactly a prolific goalscorer with two of those seasons being in the Championship.

Ashley Barnes – 27 year-old Burnley striker

This season he has scored 6 goals with 3 assists in 27 Premier League appearances for Burnley.

The news is that Rafa believes he would be a good option alongside top striker Dwight Gayle up front.

Crystal Palace are also interested in the player, but we’d be very surprised if this is a real transfer target for Newcastle this summer, with Rafa surely wanting classier players brought into the club for next season.

We could be wrong but the 6ft tall striker seems like an underwhelming transfer target for Newcastle and we can do a lot better.

But we’ve been wrong before too.

🙂

What do you think?
