There’s a report in the Northern Echo that Newcastle will make a firm bid for one of their top midfield targets – Tom Cairney – very soon.
There is news that Tom is keen to sign for the Magpies after Scottish International colleague Matt Ritchie has been trying to persuade him to come to Tyneside this summer.
Tom Cairney – Newcastle target this summer
Things have been very quiet since the end of season almost two weeks ago but what we learned from last summer is that Rafa is probably calling the players he wants in an effort to persuade them to join the Rafa revolution at Newcastle and certainly he had some success with those calls last season.
When he wasn’t successful it was because players didn’t want to play in the Championship last season, but that is no longer a barrier to the Newcastle club after we were promoted as Champions for the second time in seven years.
And we have to think that a Rafa Benitez managed Newcastle United in front of sold-out 52,000 home gates at Newcastle’s a huge drawer for some very good players.
Fulham lost out to Reading earlier this week in the playoffs, so they will have at least another year down below in the Championship and manager Slavisa Jokanovic wants to keep his star players.
This is when Jokanovic said after the Reading defeat:
“I expect our best players are going to stay with us,” “We are talking about most important players – they are going to stay with us.”
The official asking price for Cairney is a whopping £20M and Newcastle would offer £12M, but there’s got to be a very decent chance to reach an agreement with Fulham for Tom’s transfer.
Something between £12M and £20M maybe, with incentive payments once Tom pays a certain number of games, could be enough for Fulham to sell their star player.
Jokanovic would then have time this summer to bring in reinforcements for their promotion push next season, since Newcastle pay cool cash for their transfer targets and up front too.
Sounds like a deal is possible to us.
