The Mirror is reporting on Sunday that Newcastle are ready to make a swoop for Brazilian Gabriel Pires, who plays for Leganes in La Liga.
Newcastle have been linked with midfielder Gabriel Pires since last January and he only joined Leganes in Spain from Juventus last August, having spent the previous season on loan at the club.
Newcastle tried to get a permanent deal done in January and when that was not possible we tried to arrange a half-season loan deal with an option to buy, but that also fell through.
Gabriel Pires – 6M Bid coming from Newcastle
The 23 year-old play-maker has been impressive at Leganes this season scoring five goals with two assists in 33 La Liga games.
The Mirror reports that Benitez has been kept up to date with the midfielder’s progress by his own contacts in Madrid and also by Newcastle scout Graham Carr who is also said to be keen on the player.
Pires has a £6M release clause in his contract and at 23 years old is just the age for players coming into the club and to be coached by the impressive Rafa Benitez.
Pires admitted earlier this year that Newcastle were interested in him and he could be one of the first signings Rafa makes this summer.
Newcastle have already signed 25 year-old Christian Atsu from Chelsea, after he had an impressive loan spell at Newcastle and the deal will be completed on July 1st when the new financial year starts and the summer transfer window opens.
Christian’s big challenge next season will be to be more consistent, because he certainly possesses the class and the skill and is a likable player.
It very much looks like Newcastle want to sign Gabriel Pires and it appears that Benitez is convinced he can do the job in the Premier League for Newcastle next season and the fee also seems reasonable at £6M.
