Newcastle To Challenge Liverpool For Top Free Agent

Gael Clichy announced recently that he will be leaving Manchester City this summer when his contract runs out.

So the former  Arsenal player will become a free agent and maybe he could be a decent signing for Newcastle, although a number of clubs will be interested in the 31 year-old left back.

Rafa has said he is interested in signing players with Premier League experience this summer and Gael has played a total of 316 games in the Premier League by our reckoning.

Gael Clichy – free agent this summer

However, Liverpool need a left back to replace James Milner next season and they are SkyBet favorites to sign the player and it’s only a short hop to Liverpool from Manchester, so that move could interest Clichy.

Liverpool have also qualified for the Champions League next season so they can offer him that too.

Newcastle are third favourites at 6/1 to sign the French International left-back.

It’s going to be  difficult to challenge Liverpool for the player, but we need to bring in a left back to challenge Paul Dummett for the starting  position next season.

It’s almost certain that both Massadio Haidara and Achraf Lazaar will be leaving the club for pastures anew in the summer and anything Rafa can get for them will be plowed back into his transfer finds for this summer.

Gael could certainly do the job for Newcastle so we have to hope Rafa can persuade him to join the Rafa revolution on Tyneside.

His wages are likely to be high after playing at City, but he’s a player we should try to sign – he would be a very good signing for us this summer given his vast experience.

What do you think?

I don’t want any mercenaries at nufc. He has not been as good as he was at arsenal for a while. Granted he’s still a good defender but we need team spirit wanting to play for each other. I highly doubt we’d get that from him.
Hungry players is what we need.

Very true, he’ll not come and that’d be for the best.

OneAlanShearer – I have to agree – I think Cliché is past his best and we would have to pay him a ridiculous amount – there have to be younger alternatives.

Martoon, Freudian slip :). For too long these have been the type of Cliche players we were linked with. He’s ideal for Liverpool. They need immediate bang for their buck and will ship him out in 2 years. We need to take a patient long term approach and bring in a young is somewhat raw talent that can get on board with our philosophy.

This guy, along with Zabaleta, would be ideal for us. My only concern is that of motivation, stepping down and all that. But this is the kind of quality we need.

    Top CF, MF, winger, set.

It’s a no from me to Clichy (if I’m given a say in it).

Really don’t think we need to bring players in that are over 30, with a limited playing futures, and looking for their pension. Players from the likes of City are also on big fat wages, which I don’t think we should change our wage structure to accommodate.

Far rather bring in young hungry players who still have something to prove, and who want to benefit from playing for an experienced coach like Rafa. Apart from strikers, I believe we have enough experience in the squad to cope with the rigours of the Premier League. I would still prefer to bring a striker in their mid-20’s who will grow with the club.

    BenbulbenMag – Very clever 🙂
But yes your are right – ideal for the likes Liverpool but not us who want to build. Sorry cyprus I can’t agree with Zabaleta either for the same reasons as Clichy.

31 is to old for us? Even on a free? There is something to be said for experience

A player to ‘challenge’ Dummett for left back??
Any half decent premiership quality full back would be better than Dummett. He’s the only full back I’ve seen who waits until his opponent is RIGHT in front of him before trying to pass the ball down the line.
Takes ages to get his feet right when attacking. A very limited player and not good enough for the season ahead.
We must get a better option than him.

Let’s be honest, the reason most people do not want Clichy is because he has high wages… and we all know to temper our expectations when it comes to Ashley.

The John Hall reign wouldn’t take a 2nd look at Clichy, and not because the club would have to make cuts in other areas to be able to afford a full-back at the end of his career.

Defo no to smalling donkey of a defender and playing for us he’d give a penalty away every game he gets away with it playing for man u but he wouldn’t with us
Clichy would be good for a season but he’ll be on crazy money

Clichy would be a good addition, don’t recall him every having any attitude issues but Liverpool would seem the more likely place be ends up.

I would go for one of these three.

    Charlie Taylor
    Aaron Cresswell
    Andrew Robertson

manxpie @17 Re Clichy I think that’s the point a few of us were making earlier he would be good for a season but he would want at least a 2 year contract if not 3 and then we’d be stuck with his high wages with him playing less & less due to injury or diminishing form (think Colo)!

Owen, vaduka, Campbell, rush,Barnes and many more players bought by the toon with vast experience at the top didn’t work out well for us.younger hungry players are what is needed for us,Andy Cole, gazza, Lee clark, shearer, miller, w oodgate ,I could go on all day all relatively young lads with experience and most of them bought for peanuts I no which lot I would choose.

JP @21 – I can’t see Palace doing any deals until their new manager is in place which may be a while yet. The new man might want to keep Townsend so that deal could easily fall through!
