We’ve looked a few times at which players could be leaving Newcastle this summer and every time we look it seems more of the returning players do not have a future at Newcastle and certainly some of last season’s squad will not be kept at the club either.
The surprise news this week is that it looks like Rafa Benitez is not prepared to offer either Vurnon Anita or Yoan Gouffran new contracts this summer and therefore they will become free agents and leave for nothing in July.
Between the two of them they made 86 first team appearances for the team – Vurnon played 31 games with 26 starts and Yoan had his best season ever at Newcastle with 45 appearances and 36 starts with 7 very good goals.
Could be the end of the road for Yoan Gouffran and Vurnon Anita
But both had good seasons for Newcastle
Those that were sent out on loan mostly were players who were not really wanted by Rafa in the Championship first team squad and for others – like Tim Krul, Siem de Jong and the youngsters it was so they could get first team playing time.
Here were the players on loan in the second half of the season.
[table “63” not found /]And in truth not one of them had outstanding season last season playing for other teams, which is why we think they hardly have a chance now in the Rafa’s newcastle in the Premier league.
Of those seven players we think only local lad Adam Armstrong will still be with Newcastle next season but he will again be loaned out to a Championship club.
In addition we had players in the first team squad who don;t seem to have a future at Newcastle and they include Grant Hanley, Matz Sels, Achraf Lazaar, Jesus Gamez, Massadio Haidara and Daryl Murphy.
All will be sold if possible or sent out on loan to get them off the wage bill and we think Chancel Mbemba could be sold if Rafa is able to bring in two center-backs this summer.
In addition Sammy Ameobi and Haris Vuckic will not be retained when their contracts run out at the end of June.
So it looks like the following players will be released or be for sale in the summer
- Florian Thauvin – sell (sold?) to Marseille for £10M
- Henri Saivet – sell if possible
- Emmanuel Riviere – sell if possible
- Kevin Mbabu – sell if possible
- Haris Vuckic – contact will not be renewed
- Sammy Ameobi – contact will not be renewed
- Achraf Lazaar – sell if possible
- Jesus Gamez – sell if possible
- Matz Sels – sell if possible or a season long loan deal
- Massadio Haidara – sell if possible
- Daryl Murphy – sell to a Championship club
- Vurnon Anita – contact will not be renewed
- Yoan Gouffran – contact will not be renewed
- Siem de Jong – sell – doubtful he’s good enough for Newcastle
- Tim Krul – Rafa could bring in a new goalkeeper in the summer and sell Tim
- Grant Hanley – sell – many Championship clubs are already after him
- Chancel Mbemba – will be sold if Rafa brings in two center-backs this summer
So there are 17 players who could not be with us by September because they have either been sold – which would be the preferred option so Rafa gets those funds to spend on new players.
The alternative to that is they are sent out on loan for the season to get them off the Newcastle wage bill.
That’s an awful lot of players to move out in just one summer, but quite honestly if Rafa can bring in say 8 good players for next season he could move these players out and move some of the talented U23 players up into the first team squad and have a good Premier League squad.
It could really be a massive clear-out this summer and much bigger than what we even saw last summer.
Which players do you think Newcastle should move out this summer?
Comments welcome.

Comment #1I think Mbemba could be our number one defender next season if his performances since January are anything to go by. Mbabu is worth keeping too. I think he’s had s decent season and can play anywhere across the back. I’d sell the rest.

Comment #2Seems a tad extreme to me.
Did I miss something on Anita?
Mbabu I think is worth keeping for now.
I don’t want to see Mbemba sold (mind, that could be softened with who his replacement is).
Also, isn’t Saviet already sold?

Comment #317 sounds like a lot if you put it that way. Still we do need huge renewal of the squad. With clueless people like McMuffin, and Johnny C. as head coach we lost our way.

Comment #5A lot of calmer for inanacho on here (apologies if spelt wrong) what have fans based that off? He won’t have de bruyne, Silva, sane etc to feed him here. He looks a decent prospect but not going to get anywhere near as many sitters as he does for them.
Michy Bats will make a very good goalscorer but at 33m he’s alot, well worth the money though as he’ll be some players in a couple of years.
Not keen on loan deals, and not keen on cairney unless we get him for around 10m / 12m. Anything more and we’ve been robbed

How’s he got on whilst on loan?

Comment #7Here’s a crazy thought. What about bringing back Jose Enrique? Still a good fullback, lots of experience, would probably be happy to play for our man Rafa. And since we like Villa CB’s what about Ronnie Vlaar? Could be a very good acquisition.

Comment #10G2…What’s Enrique been up to? Is he still good, or was that very much tongue in cheek?
As for the midfielder to drive the attack….this is Colbacks season. Honest.

Comment #13Those I’d be tempted to keep would be : Anita, as a player with premiership experience, who can play at RB or in midfield and will be reaching the peak of his playing powers over the next few years, Siem de Jong, provided he proved his fitness during his loan spell last season ( he could be Rafa’s surprise on us all). I feel that his experience and know how could be valuable as a 20 minute sub to see out a close game in the PL. Tim Krul, surely he would be retained before Elliott if they are both fully fit ? He was, after all our no.1 with Elliott as no.2 before his injury, and much as I like Elliott, I’d keep Krul before him. In fact, I think Rafa is well served with goalies and all that needs to be done is to send Sels out on loan. We don’t need more goalies coming in. Finally, I’d keep Mbemba unless Rafa goes for two new CBs. Class player with his best years to come.

Comment #14I’m actually not sure about the old Enreekee man Ibiza mate. I think he was released from his contract by Liverpool (72K a week, no wonder!). Not many appearances over three seasons as well. But I always liked to watch the bull when he was with us. He’s 30 now and certainly not worth 72K a week. If he would accept 30K and fill in he might be worth a go.

Comment #15Colback should only be allowed to drive the attack out for a quick late night vindaloo Ibiza mate. He doesn’t pick out enough forward balls for me. I used to like him but he’s too cautious now and likes to play sideways and backwards a lot.

Comment #22Talented U23’s?!! You mean those playing in Div2?
I was impressed with the ability of the three players that slotted in during the Cup competition. But they did not show that they were capable of taking on competitive Championship teams, or we would have seen them in a league match.

Comment #25Would have to agree Lindisfarne mate. Rafa is only just beginning to bring in decent young’uns. Victor Fernandez the forward comes to mind. And I think we have a decent young Swede? Many of the others aren’t panning out. Is Heardman going to make it? Turns 22 this year I think.

Comment #27Elliots distribution is much better than Kruls and will be a source of quick breakaways if thats how Rafa wants to play it.
The 3 cb i would keep are Lascelles, Mbemba and Clark get in simunivic or whatever its spelled like from Celtic and let them fight it out in a pit for whos first choice.
Rb Yedders and buy someone better, Dummet and buy someone better.
Midfield Shelvey and Hayden with Siem in front would work ,get Cairney in as well, Ritchie ,Atsu,Gayle ,Perez and Mitro should stay and buy someone better, possibly give aarons a shot in pre season to see if his knees and hammys are fixed, the rest should go we also need a superquick lw who can cross to feed mitro if the throughballs from Cairney/dejong or shelvey arent getting through.
This will not happen in one season though obviously ,some players have long contracts and will be difficult to shift, we are now learning and recent buys are on shorter contracts where they were only going to be here for one season (possibly two).
its going to be fun ladies and gentlemen, when does it start again…….Bl00dy August

Comment #30Well, we’ve made good progress on here today lads. We may or may not need a keeper. We need one or two good CB’s. We need a pacey LW to match Ritchie. We need a very good AMF. Comment #39About this whole Charnley picture of him estimating his Johnson size. Could this be why he’s being investigated by the police? Is lying to your boss a big enough deal to get you arrested and carted off? Time will tell I suppose. It just shows you should never exaggerate Lee.

As Charnley is actually explaining to Big Mike, Anita isn’t small he’s just a long way away.
He’s over 6ft tall as it happens.
