Rafa Benitez Interested In Signing New Winger Target

Newcastle have been interested in Anderlecht winger Frank Acheampong for 18 months now and there is news today in Belgium newspaper DH that we are again interested in signing the player this summer.

And by out reckoning that’s the 98th player we have been reported to be interested in signing this summer, before our reentry back into the Premier League.

🙂

The 23 year-old has had a very good season at Anderlecht  and we do expect Rafa Benitez to bring in a couple of new wingers this summer in addition to the already signed Christian Atsu, Frank’s Ghanaian Intentional team-mate.

23 year-old Frank Acheampong – Anderlecht and Ghana winger

He signed for Anderlecht back in April of 2013 from Thailand club Buriram United for a fee of €1M and the winger made his debut for Anderlecht in April of that year against KSC Lokeren.

He has played 165 times for Anderlecht over the last four years with 22 goals and 21 assists.

We were linked with Acheampong  last summer and during the previous January and last season he scored 6 goals in 47 total appearances for the current Belgian Champions.

It would be interesting if we do sign Acheampong this summer because then we’ll have two Ghanaian International wingers on our books.

The news in Belgium newspaper DH is that Rafa Benitez is now interested in signing Frank after he has had such a good season for Anderlecht.

Frank has 12 caps for Ghana with 2 goals and made the Ghana squad for the African Cup of Nations held in Gabon earlier this year.

What do you think?

And if Ghana qualify for AFCON then we lose two of our wingers in the middle of the season assuming they both get called up.

there is a lot of class African players kicking about, but that competition is a massive hindrance to premier league teams.

Take me it was on Ed man.

It’s close season and there’s nowt to report until it happens.

Perhaps you’d be happier reading the red-tops to see what they’ve got to offer in terms of real news??

Maybe it’s time to bring in a winter break for the Premier League in line with the rest of the big European leagues? I’d miss Boxing Day games and the general rush of games over Christmas, but it might help with fatigue and England’s chances in the summer International games.

Also, AFCON can take place during the break so the African players won’t miss any league games. Of course they won’t get the rest and end up playing more games by the end of the season, but there doesn’t seem to be another way around that.

It’ll be interesting to see that stats on our transfers this summer. Percentage of players signed who we were linked with, versus percentage of players signed who were surprises. Is Rafa doing much more behind the scenes than the rumoured signings online and in the papers? Exciting times ahead I hope!

Putting a different slant on that age related comment, I went to my first live game last year for a long long time, the pre season Southend one and wondered why there were so many kids on the pitch warming up and realised that they were actually the players when they lined up to play.

We do have more pace and better strikers than Aberdeen but our creativity and defence vs their attackers would imho come 2nd, they remind me of a Fulham on steroids

I see Chelsea have completed the signing of Silva from Monaco for 43M pounds. Sniff. As I told Ron Knee we could have done that if we’d wanted to. We’re after better players.

I agree Martoon. It’s been back and forth, especially in the second half. Like most people I expected Chelsea to dominate. Not a big fan of either team but I’d have chosen Arsenal to win because I can’t stand Costa 🙂

Lindisfarne – isn’t their a European place for the FA Cup winners? Or have they changed the rules? I haven’t kept up with the changes in qualifying rules for the past few years.
