I’s not the first time we have been linked with goalkeeper Pepe Reina this summer and there is another report in the Sun today the Newcastle manager wants to bring his former goalkeeper at Liverpool and Napoli back to play in the Premier League with Newcastle United.
Rafa is a big fan of Reina, not only because he is a good goalkeeper, but the way he trains and sets a good example in the dressing room – he is a leader on and off the field.
Maybe Benitez feels that some of the goalkeepers at Newcastle such as Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot could gain from training day in and day out with the former Liverpool goalkeeper?
But it’s more likely he wants Pepe to come in and be a leader in Newcastle’s defense, which last season was a little suspect and hesitant at times.
Pepe Reina – could be signed by Rafa Benitez this summer
It’s still a surprise that Rafa is interested in bringing Reina to Newcastle, assuming the news is accurate, because this summer we will four senior goalkeepers at the club.
Tim Krul, Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot and Matz Sels – as well as 20 year-old Freddie Woodman – but it looks like he’s not comfortable with either of those four?
Reina has only 12 months left on his contract at Napoli and at 34 he wouldn’t cost much and maybe he could come on a two year deal to help Newcastle get back into the top half of the Premier League and even push for a trophy over the next two years.
We watched Napoli a few times last season and Reina looked good in goal and certainly he’s very very experienced.
Rafa has already been asked by the Chronicle if he would take Reina back and this is what he said earlier this summer:
“I think there’s nothing to say about Reina, Pepe is a great player but above all a leader in the dressing room.”
“We missed him in the year he went to Bayern Munich, now he can make a difference both on and off the pitch. Would I take him to Newcastle if he left?”
“I respect Napoli, as that’s where he is, and our club which has a lot of goalkeepers who are doing well. We need to be calm, we’ll talk to the club and decide on our targets.”
“I have a great personal relationship with Reina, he’s a great goalkeeper, but he’s at Napoli and I’m sure he’s happy there.”
It certainly seems that the Spanish goalkeeper could make a difference at Newcastle with his leadership and that seems to be the main reason Rafa could want him.
But it would spell the end of Tim Krul’s career at Newcastle if Pepe is signed and with all these reports linking Reina with the Magpies it wouldn’t surprise us too much now if Rafa does bring Reina to Newcastle this summer.
Pepe has played 716 first class games in his career so far over 17 seasons and he has 34 caps for Spain.
In his very first season back in 2000-2001 he played 34 times for Barcelona when he was just 18.
What do you think?
