It seems almost certain now that Rafa Benitez wants his former goalkeeper Pepe Reina at Newcastle and if he comes it must be a very good bet that the 34 year-old vastly experienced player who is a leader on and off the field will become the new captain of the club.
But with Newcastle having four senior goalkeepers in Krul, Elliot, Darlow and Sels, plus the impressive young Freddie Woodman, Rafa looks like he will be selling at least two of our goalkeepers this summer.
Pepe Reina on his way to Newcastle
Reina has fallen out with some of the senior Napoli officials and there was even a social media row recently between his wife and one senior club director at the club.
Well there’s nothing like having your wife backing you 100%.
Now that Reina knows that Rafa wants him at Newcastle to play once again in the Premier League, we would assume the Spanish goalkeeper would jump at the chance to be part of the reemergence of Newcastle United as a premier force in English football.
Reina has played at Liverpool and for one season at Napoli for Rafa, who is a big fan of the player, not only because he’s a very good goalkeeper but his work ethic and example to other players is first class.
Rafa will need to sell at least two goalkeepers this summer and we think those two will be Tim Krul and Matz Sels, with Rob Elliott and Karl Darlow fighting it out with Reina for the number one jersey.
Tim has only one year of his contract left at Newcastle and Rafa will try to sell him this summer before he becomes a free agent next summer and there also seems to be some demand for Matz Sels in his home country of Belgium.
Newcastle will want to recoup what they paid for Sels (about £5M) but with Tim just returning from a long term injury we probably cannot get more than about £6M for him?
Reina will probably cost about £3M from Napoli.
But there will be a huge shake-up in the goalkeeping department at Newcastle this summer – that’s just one of the things on Rafa’s very busy agenda this summer.
What do you think?
