One of the problems Newcastle have when they want to sell players who are no longer required at the club, is that we pay them big wages and often to move on from Newcastle they have to take a big wage cut.
That seems to be one of the problems with Grant Hanley’s expected departure from the club, as Championship clubs are unwilling to pay him the reported £45K/week he is getting at Newcastle.
25 year-old Grant Hanley – big wages at Newcastle
Rafa wants to bring in two center-backs this summer and there’s news today the Newcastle manager is likely to bid £12M for Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala, but that’s £4M less than the option to buy clause in his loan deal at Valencia to make the move permanent.
One thing going for Newcastle is that we pay cash up front for our transfers which helps us in the market and often we can get good deals because of that.
But to bring two center-backs in, it’s likely that both Grant Hanley and Chancel Mbemba will be moved out and Grant will have to reduce his wage demands if he is to sign for a top Championship club.
One thing that sometimes happens in these situations is the player is sent out on loan so he has more chance of keeping his high wages, but it seems Grant’s time at Newcastle is over and Rafa will want to sell him outright this summer along with a number of other players who are now surplus to requirements.
Derby County, Aston Villa and Wolves have expressed an interest in taking the former Blackburn Rovers captain so we hope a deal can be worked out.
There’s a lot of work to do for Rafa and Lee Charnley this summer and it’s likely to be even busier transfer window than last summer, which was hectic enough.
