Newcastle have surprisingly lost out on Ruben Semedo, who wants to play in the Spanish League with Villareal and the deal was struck at a reasonable €14M.
But there’s much better news today in ESPN that Newcastle are now very close to the loan signing of 19 year-old Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham.
The ESPN sources are said to be close to the deal on the Newcastle side, so let’s hope this report is accurate.
19 year-old Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham
As we have seen with the Semedo deal, we were supposed to be signing the lad in the last day or two, but for whatever the reason was – it just didn’t happen.
That didn’t happen, but we have to move one – you win some you lose some.
Abraham seems like a great striker in the making and he would benefit having a season on loan with Rafa Benitez, but it’s also not surprising that Antonio Conte wants some guarantees the player will get enough first team playing time if he does come to Newcastle.
Abraham scored 26 goals in 50 games in all competitions for Bristol City in the Championship last season and the lad looks like a natural goalscorer.
Brighton are the other club close to signing him, but there was a Times article yesterday that reported we had won the race to sign him, but then there were other reports that came out that Tammy was still undecided – so you never can tell until the lad is signed.
Chelsea are also ready to give Tammy a new deal at Chelsea, although we had thought that had already happened and he was now on £25K/week and those would be the wages that Newcastle will pay Chelsea for him next season, plus a loan fee.
Update: But that’s not true with reports from London he will get a wage rise up to £45K/week and we suppose that’s what we have to pay for the 19 year-old next season.
Over £2M a year – not a bad deal for a 19 year-old!!
But let’s hope we get Tammy through the door and soon.
It’s also looking like Rafa Benitez is willing to sell Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer, if Newcastle get a deal where we can recover the £14M we paid Anderlecht for him two years ago.
If that happens it will be a little bit of a surprise.
What do you think?

Comment #2There is so much excitement around Abraham but seriously – he is not the Premier League proven striker we need. He is a gamble and will play in the cups, as a sub and may fill in for Gayle when he is injured – but we still need a guaranteed 20 goal a season striker in the Premier League.
Gayle hasn’t proven yet he can do it at the top level and might be that player but we don’t know for sure. We need another striker besides Abraham that is proven at the highest level if we a going to compete mid table so forgive me for not being excited about him.
There are a lot of holes in this team. I haven’t seen us linked with any decent attacking midfielders yet for instance. I’m not sold on Perez, Diame had a poor season in the championship and De Jong is injury prone.

Comment #3I may be slightly bias given my name on this blog, but i still think mitro is worth a punt. Still very young and always gives our attack some purpose. Yes, he’s not the greatest finisher in the world, but he needs someone up there with him. I suppose it all comes down to how willing, if at all, Rafa is on playing 2 up front

Comment #5Mitro is 22 years old and I think was unfairly tainted as our hope and saviour when he arrived. We put him upfront alone in his first season in the premier league and he did ok – but he was (and is) a kid for christ sake and people forget that. His best years are ahead of him and when he hits 25 he might have developed into a force. We should be developing him not relying on him.

Ur not the only one who thinks that but I don’t think it’s likely to happen we need funds and he is still able to attract interest, anything above 10mill and I’d snap tgeir hands off

Comment #7WWSBRD – I’m sure Rafa knows. It’s whether the club will buy one that worries me!

thoughts on giroud links? Surely he’d be at least a 20 goal a season man if he started week in week out. I’d happily pay 20m for him

Comment #9It seems to have gone very quiet about Lejeune who we were supposed to have agreed terms just a few days ago!

“Abraham is expected to double his wages to more than £45,000 and extend his Chelsea contract, which currently has two years left to run, before heading to Newcastle on loan for the 2017/18 and a deal could be confirmed in the coming days.”

Comment #16Abraham, Lejeune and Semedo should have already been in the bag by now. We seem to concentrate so much on “closing in” that others seem to come in on our blindside and steal the prize. Too much mucking about, talking and not delivering. Was it ever thus with the Toon?
