Newcastle Goalkeeper Situation Becoming Very Complicated

It appears that Rafa Benitez wants to bring in an experienced goalkeeper to play between the sticks for Newcastle next season in the Premier league.

The latest news it that we have already tabled an offer for Willy Caballero, who is a free agent after he was released by Manchester City this summer.

But the news today is that Chelsea also want him as their back up to number one goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, after Asmir Begovic was sold to Bournemouth.

Willy Caballero – likely to join Chelsea

And the surprise is that even though Newcastle have offered Willy better terms, he seems to prefer to play in London at the Blues, even though he will not get much playing time there, with Courtois one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment.

We would have been happy enough with Willy coming into Newcastle, since he seems a solid enough goalkeeper who makes very few mistakes.

However, as this news is breaking in the national newspapers today, we also learn that former target Pepe Reina has just turned down a two year extension to his contract at Napoli and could leave as a free agent next summer, which may even be his intention.

However, Napoli are reported to be absolutely furious with their goalkeeper and are now likely to sell him this summer.

And with terms already agreed with Newcastle, maybe now is the time to sign Pepe Reina – one of our surprise targets this summer.

Current goalkeeper Matz Sels was brought in by Rafa last summer from Gent and is almost certain to leave the club permanently this summer, with Anderlecht initially interested.

They have now withdrawn their interest in the Newcastle goalkeeper, but the Chronicle is reporting there is interest in Matz from four different countries and we would assume Newcastle simply want to get their money back on the Belgian goalkeeper, who has no future at the club.

The other goalkeeper who could be on his way out this summer is veteran Tim Krul and if Newcastle do sign Pepe Reina he will be the starting goalkeeper at the club.

And Tim will hardly want to be a reserve goalkeeper fighting it out with Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow as to who is on the bench.

So we expect Tim to be sold, especially when he only has one year left on his contract.

Given this rather complex situation in just one position at the club,  give a thought to Rafa Benitez and Lee Charnley as they try to do these deals for Newcastle this summer.

It’s certainly not easy as uncertainty seems to reign.
