There’s news today in the Sun that Rafa Benitez is interested in Villarreal striker Cedric Bakambu who was born in a suburb of Paris, France but has represented DR Congo 13 times with 5 goals.

Newcastle are at the moment attempting to bring in 19 year-old striker Tammy Abraham from Chelsea on loan, but even if that is successful it seems Rafa wants a second striker brought in.

Our records show we were interested in signing this player three years ago when he was still at Sochaux and at that time he was available for around £3M.

But then the next year he signed for Villareal on a five year contract, so he still has a good three years left on his deal with the Yellow Submarine.

While at Sochaux for four season he scored 21 goals in 107 total appearances.

The news is that Rafa has contacted his former club over the striker’s availability, but they are reported to want a  massive £15M for the player who represented France at U18 through U20 level.

That’s one of the problems Newcastle seem to be facing this summer, the fees wanted for players are way over the top.

And that’s especially true if you are a Premier League club when other clubs know the English clubs are getting massive TV rights payments from the league every May.

It makes it that much more difficult to get some good deals this summer for the Magpies.

While at Villareal over the past two seasons, Bakambu has scored 34 goals in 81 total appearances so he’s a decent enough striker.

What do you think?
