Newcastle In Surprise Move For Former Tunisian International Defensive Target

Newcastle were very interested in signing Tunisian International center-back Aymen Abdennour from Monaco two years ago and he was a priority transfer target for us  in the summer of 2015.

But we couldn’t sign the 6ft 2ins defender and he finally joined Valencia instead in late August for a fee reported to be a rather massive £22M for that time.

He was brought in at Valencia ostensibly as a replacement to Manchester City-bound Nicolas Otamendi.

Foot Mercato are today reporting that Newcastle are now again interested in the player – who is available for transfer – and have inquired about the big center-back and former target who is now priced at €15M, which is around £13.2M – a big drop from £22M.

27 year-old Tunisian International center-back Aymen Abdennour

The other Premier league club also interested in the player is reported to be Everton, but it’s thought their number one target is Burnley’s England  International Micheal Keane.

Marseille are also said to be very interested in signing the player and the player’s reps have already held several meetings with Marseille Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta.

Abdennour only played 14 games for Valencia last season and in the season before that he played 43 games, so his stock seems to have dropped in Spain over the last year.

Valencia have also just signed Newcastle’s Portuguese transfer target – 23 year-old Ruben Semedo – so it looks like the big Tunisian is surplus to requirements..

The 27 year-old was certainly a big draw two years ago after turning in some very good performances at Monaco, but he would still be a risk at Newcastle since he’s never played in the Premier League.

Rafa had made a point early in this summer transfer window that he wanted to sign experienced Premier League players.

Aymen Abdennour signed on at Monaco on loan from Toulouse back in January, 2104 and the loan was made permanent that summer and the player was given a four year deal.

But he stayed only 18 months at Monaco before they sold him for £22M to Valencia two years ago after he played only 32 games for the French League side.

Some big clubs were after him at the time including Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle from the Premier League.

Rafa will have had reports from his contacts at Valencia on the player’s performances so it will be to the Spanish manager if he does try to sign him, but it looks like he’s likely to sign for Marseille.

What do you think?

There’s a on going theme with all these transfer target, unless I’m reading these wrong. This is how they all seem to start. Newcastle are looking at this player, so are Everton, West Ham and Brighton. It’s getting a little boring ready the same old shite when we are linked. Could we not on just one of these, even if we lie a little Ed say, Newcastle are looking at this player, so are REAL MADIRD, BARCELONA AND AC MILLAN. Lol

Very VERY disappointing, I went to buy my new NUFC shirt today, been looking forward to it for ages now the wronga logo has gone, got to the shop and they only have small or medium available, I wanted a large. I was told they had been expecting 6 (yep that’s right, just SIX) large shirts today but they have not arrived.

Way to go NUFC and Sports Defect, what a way to launch the shirt sales, just a few small or medium shirts?

Really am pissed off with them now.

Can anyone remember how many transfer targets we were linked with last close season.? And how many (strong links) came through the door?
