Newcastle Seem To Be Delaying Final Move To Sign Defensive Target

We have been led to believe via the reports about 26 year-old Eibar center-back Florian Lejeune that Newcastle are very close to signing the Frenchman for £8.7M and he’s highly rated with clubs like Arsenal and Spurs also said to be interested in signing the player.

But things seem to have gone very quiet over the last few days and today the Shields Gazette are reporting the Spanish club are waiting for Newcastle to contact them again about the player.

The reports have been that Newcastle are willing to invoke the £8.7M release clause in Florian’s contract at Eibar and that would seem a reasonable enough fee for the former Manchester City player, who had an excellent season in La Liga last term.

Rafa Benitez knows he will have to strengthen the Newcastle defense from last season in the Championship when at times we seemed a little porous and we lacked experience in the backline.

Captain Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark were the two first choice center-backs last season and both lads played well and both improved their games and they will be kept at Newcastle, with Rafa wanting to bring in two experienced center-backs.

One of them seems to be Florian Lejeune and today we have been linked with Manchester United and England International center-back  Chris Smalling.

It’s expected if Rafa can bring in two new central defenders that Grant Hanley and Chancel Mbemba will both be sold.

So without knowing what exactly is  going on behind the scenes, it’s difficult to know why Newcastle seem to be  hesitating in making their final move to sign Florian Lejeune.

What do you think?

If you asked me would I have Smalling instead of Clark or even Lascelles, I’d think about it. Then I’d say no. And, we’ve got Mbemba who isn’t bad either. If we do buy a CB (it’s a long season I know) he must be head and shoulders above what we got, as preparation for the next level. Despite being an MU player, he ain’t that. In fact, he may be part of the reason MU aren’t the MU of old.

So Rafa, you rightly ask, what to focus on? Well, ok: not on a goalie. That position has competition and you can only play one at a time. Creative MF? Spot on. On his day, Shelvey can be very good. Problem: first 3 words of last sentence. Hayden is a work in progress. As is Shelvey. Spend 25 million on a player there.

CF? Spot on. I’m a fan of Mitrovic, I think he will come good. Problem: the word ‘think’ in the previous sentence. We need a CF who’ll immediately come good. Spend 30+ million there. BTW, Gayle will get 8-10 goals. Good, but not enough.

Left wing? Good call. Atsu is a good player, but he can do a disappearing act. One more winger who can play both sides is a good idea. 10+ mil.

LB or RB? Yes, given the fact we have released and will release a few in that position. 10+ mil.

I’ll leave you to it man. I know you’re busy 🙂

Forgot that n.10 position. Maybe the attacking MF covers that, or find a ‘fake’ n.9, a little wily goal scoring guy to play behind Mitrovic

Here is hoping Mike Ashley doesn’t sell the club. Better the Devil you know folks.

The old Woven and Embroidered Club Badge, being replaced by a cheap plastic sticker, is just a sign of the times.

Ambition out, Russian Roulette in. Rafa said Charnley is the best he ever worked with, ya know.

Cyprus – like the thinking !
Just wondering if it’s quite on the transfer front because of takeover talks in the background.
Atsu’s transfer being sanctioned because there was a pre-agreement.
Probably too early to be at the due due diligence stage but you never know.

If, as reported, Smalling is available for £15m and we can meet his demands he’d be my first choice. Very happy to sign them both though. Concerned at the lack of strikers coming through the doors at present though…..

I don’t want to reignite controversy, but I will 🙂

Would this player (and us) be willing to give it another go with us? Arguably the best footballer we’ve had since the entertainers and he might do well with Rafa. At n.10, free, probably, given his demands.

Signing one or two players in general would be a good start, im getting a bit uneasy at the lack of activity.
