22 Year-Old England International Defender Wanted By Newcastle

Newcastle have been linked with lots of players this summer already and one of them we really like is 22 year-old Calum Chambers of Arsenal, who started his career at Southampton and last season he played on loan for Middlesbrough in the Premier League.

The 3 times capped England International only turned 22 in January, but he has already made 82 Premier League appearances and he looks a very good player in the making at right back or center-back – and in fact he can also play as a holding midfielder

If Rafa Benitez were to sign him for Newcastle then surely the Spanish manager can bring out the best in this talented youngster?

22 year-old Calum Chambers of Arsenal – good player

The Chronicle is reporting that Newcastle are unwilling to pay the £15M asking price for the player, but at some point we have to start paying out the (big) money so we can bring in the players we need.

Rafa Benitez, as we reported earlier today, has to bring in at least one new full back to challenge DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett, with the likes of  Jesus Gamez, Massadio Haidara and Achraf Lazaar having no future at the club.

And two of our other full-backs, Vurnon Anita and Kevin Mbabu, have already left the club.

The fact that Rafa wants to bring in up to two new center-backs this summer is also a reason why Calum could be a very useful player to have in Newcastle’s back-line for next season, with Grant Hanley also expected to leave for a Championship club this summer.

It seems like it’s a waiting game at the moment before Newcastle make the plunge into the transfer market, but that will likely have to come sooner rather than later, with pre-season training due to start two weeks tomorrow.

Calum was brought though the famous Southampton Youth Academy and he has so far played 59 times with 3 goals for Arsenal, before he was sent out on loan to Middlesbrough last season.

He  played only 25 times for the Saints before he was snapped up by Arsenal in the summer of 2014 for a fee reported to be close to £16M with performance-related add-ons.

The youngster made his full debut for Southampton back in August 2012 in a 4–1 win over Stevenage in the second round of the League Cup when he was just 17 and he made his full England debut against Norway in September.

Maybe Newcastle could even arrange a season long loan deal for Calum for next season with an option to buy next summer?

What do you think?

Just seen an article on Star online about a super computer’s prediction for the table after 5 games. Has us in 6th. Where would people like to see us after 5 games?

Fair one. Me too. Maximum points and 25 goals scored… Aal by Mitrovic. I think it’s likely, even if Liverpool get PEA.

Oh absolutely. Five games is nowt and I know there is a percieved view of an ‘easy’ opening run for us. So I can see us being up there somewhere. Like you say though, it depends on how we gel and how efficient our preseason is.

How do you feel about the level of opposition that has been announced thus far? Also do you think the level of opportunities matters in preseason? For instance, would you rather play an elite european team or someone in the ilk of Hearts?

Sorry about delay in replying, out all day yesterday and in garden soaking up the vitamin D today.

Yes I’m a Dunstonian born and bred. Although I left at sixteen and returned for a short stays of a few years a couple of time.

The Tudor Tower, we always called it The Rocket, so I wouldn’t have associated it with your blog name, do you still live in Dunston, can’t remember if you mentioned you did.

Tbh I reckon we have quite a good fixture list overall for the season but it depends how the season rolls on obviously

Preseason wise am not entirely bothered I never really watch the games tbh been to the St James one a few times and its always a bit limp as ud expect, opposition wise I dont really mind quite happy we seem to be staying close to home and not on some daft tour to make money (atleast for this year) ideally itd be a mixture of smaller teams and tough teams but its just fitness really so as long as people stay injury free itll be a success, what about u mate? Whats ur opinion on it?

We are reportedly unwilling to spend £15m on a 22 year old English international with stacks of Prem experience? Incredible and if that is true, then whoever’s valuing our targets needs a reality check.

I don’t know the count, but it feels like we have been linked with well over 100 players so far, with god know how many imminent signings. And all we have to show is Astu, a player we had on loan with the option to buy period. So technically we actually have not signed anyone this transfer window. Just one, for the love of god just one, can we see one player signed this upcoming week. Lets get a ball rolling with one signing!!!

Pretty similar standing to yourself. Not really too bothered as long as it is not a team who kick our players to bits or are a long haul flight away. That USA tour a few preseasons back was an absolute atrocity. Flying back and forth over timezones isn’t exactly good for fitness and can leave our players fatigued. On top of that did it really raise our profile over there? We didn’t even play any MLS teams.

I like the idea of a training camp in a similar climate to where we ply our trade. For instance, ireland last year was good in my opinion. I think a mini tour of some Scandi teams could be alright but getting into southern European and continental climates could be classed as energy sapping, I know when am in those countries I just want to hide in the shade.

In summary, I think preseason should all be about fitness until we have a first team squad size and team profile to cope with the brand expansion attempts.

Oh aye that American trip was a disaster, was that the one Cabaye and Barton had to spend with the kids because the club didnt check if they were able to travel in America? Haha

Aye though atm the long haul stuff shouldnt be on the table for us, natural growth then have the Chinese trips etc in a year or so to fill the coffers

Aye that’s the one. JB couldn’t get iin cos he was a wee scally so ended up in the Netherlands with Beardsley and co. Don’t recall about Cabaye thar.

I do like the idea of a strong far eastern fanbase. The fans overthere seem to have a fantastic enthusiasm for the game. I shared a cushette with some Korean students in Germany back in 08 and for twelve hours we communicated in footballers’ names such as Mark Viduka and Michael Owen.

Reading that it seems Marveux missed an opportunity to cement a starting berth. Though was he a winger or a CM? I thought he was a winger at forst but I remember him claiming he wanted to be a number 10. Terrible signing in retrospect.

Anyway, another question regarding our immediate future. How likely do you think it is that we will see a deviation from the preferred formation of last season? I have seen a bit speculation on here about a three at the back malark. I may be being cynical but I get the feeling that rafa is staunchly a 4321 kinda guy. What do you think?

At this moment in time we have not added to the squad and made it weaker by letting Anita go, I can’t see us getting much change from the first 5 games.

Chambers is a no brainer with his experience and versatility, apparently things have changed under Ashley recently. Yet to see this myself

    Ourtoon,

Personally in my honest and humble opinion I believe it premature to be writing off our transfer window. Granted it can seem to move a little slow but I am reserving judgement. What do you believe to be the hold up (if indeed there is one), do you think the investment rumours could be affecting it?

Formation wise, do you believe the 4321 system works or would you be more inclined to believe a shift in formation and tactics on a per opposition basis work more efficiently?

Our transfer window will kick off soon, have patients., I’m sure Rafa will have plenty of work going on behind the scenes and new arrivals will come in. Our first season back in the premier league is all about survival, we’re a like any newly promoted club, in need of a massive revamp and I’m sure Rafa will know it.
