It looks like manager Rafa Benitez is going to shake up the goalkeeper situation at Newcastle this summer and he is trying to bring in an experienced goalkeeper, although it looks like one of our targets – Willy Caballero – will join Chelsea today.
And the Chronicle are reporting that a loan deal that will take Matz Sels to Belgian Champions Anderlecht for the season, is almost in place with the Belgian club now agreeing to pay Matz’ full wages for next season.
25 year-old Matz Sels – loan to Anderlecht very close
The report is that Matz is already back in his home country and waiting for the deal to be completed which will see him move back to Belgium after only one season on Tyneside.
It seems the move is almost complete, with the Chronicle reporting the 25 year-old has already had pre-season fitness and medical tests at Anderlecht, so it looks like the negotiations are at an advanced stage.
The Belgian club’s Sporting Director, Herman Van Holsbeeck, has this to say today to Nieuwsblad:
“The negotiations with Newcastle ran harder than I expected.”
Newcastle were adamant the Belgium club pay Matz full wages while on loan and with that now being agreed the deal could go through very quickly this week.
And it’s interesting today that the Belgian press are reporting that Newcastle did not want to sell Matz, but a loan option was all that was available for the 25 year-old goalkeeper, which suggests Rafa hasn’t completely given up on Sels.
With Matz gone for the season that will leave Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow, Tim Krul and young Freddie Woodman as the goalkeepers, but Rafa is still trying to bring in an experienced keeper for next season on a permanent basis.
We are still linked with 35 year-old Pepe Reina, although the chances of Newcastle being able to sign him this summer from Napoli seem to be receding.
We expect the very impressive Freddie Woodman to go out on loan next season and if another goalkeeper does come in then maybe that means Tim Krul will be sold?
What do you think?
