Newcastle United have just put on their web-site that goalkeeper Matz Sels will go on loan for the season to Anderlecht where he is expected to be Anderlecht’s number one choice and should get plenty of games.
The interesting thing with Sels is that Rafa Benitez only sanctioned a loan deal and did not want to sell the Belgian U21 International goalkeeper this summer after only buying him from Gent last summer.
That suggests that Rafa still holds out some hope that with regular first team football the 25 year-old can get his game back together after a difficult time of it in England last season.
This is what Newcastle have just announced:
The 25-year-old has returned to his homeland to link up with Rene Weiler’s side – who won their 34th Belgian First Division A and will remain at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium until the end of the 2017/18 campaign.
Belgium international stopper Sels joined United from Gent in June 2016, having played Champions League football and been voted Belgium’s Goalkeeper of the Year during his time with De Buffalo’s.
Sels began last season in goal for the Magpies, making nine appearances in the Sky Bet Championship, keeping five clean sheets.
He also had three outings in the FA Cup, and a further two in the EFL Cup as Newcastle reached the last eight.
This loan deal has been pending for a week or two so it’s good that it’s finally been agreed.
This is wwat RSC Anderlecht sent out this morning.

Comment #9Is he worth anything now.
Put a player on a wage way above his level of ability and he is essentially then worth zero.

Maybe should of given Woodman a bit more credit but overall we needed a keeper and we got the best one available cant really grumble at that

Comment #12Well he definitely called this one wrong Jazzyp.
And we didn’t need a keeper Wwsbrd. We needed a number 2/3 and Steve Harper was coaching the kids and twiddling his thumbs whilst we paid five million for Sels and gave him a lucrative contract. It was a shit signing.

We had Krul away on loan injured, Darlow who Rafa didnt have much faith in and Elliott injured and pretty crap then Woodman who is a kid (last time we had to use our kid keeper it didnt end well), Sels proved to be a crap signing but thats in hindsight
Harper isnt a keeper anymore was never going to be a real option as keeper option

Comment #19I remember a certain Pavel Srnicek who was absolutely useless when he first signed. I cannot say one way or another but seemingly Sels is the highest paid player in the Belgium league (unless I have dreamt it I am sure I read this somewhere).
Rafa must see something or he would of cut his losses and fixed a clause that he is bought after certain games or at least that would be my take on it.
Certainly in the past players have come good after poor starts.
In my opinion

Comment #20I wouldn’t worry just yet, especially about the type of player which we may be going for, apparently this Lejeune is and old fashioned no frills but get the job done type, that is what we need, in terms of quality due to losing Townsend, Gini and Sissoko we are now miles behind most so we will have to be strong be prepared to fight and harass, but to do that you need fighters who will give their all, fancy dan’s like Thauvin and Cabella are no good, its grafters which will keep us up and give us a platform to build from.
Sadly to many of our fans crave for the spectacular and would welcome the fancy dan’s back, for some reason they don’t like the get the job done type, they would rather have a Janmaat over a Danny Simpson, or a Santon over a Dummett, but these eye catching do nothing’s get you nowhere, give me a Dummett and a Simpson any day of the week, and it does appear as if Rafa has the same view so his signings will be full of character and fight rather than being full of useless tricks which get you nowhere.

Comment #21I don’t think Hanley was a bad signing to be honest. He’d stacks of experience in the division and came in and played when he was required and he never complained. There will be plenty of interest from championship clubs if he’s for sale. The other two contributed nothing really.

Comment #26Gamez has been assisting Beardsley working towards his coaching badges ( don’t know if he had anything to do with the fast improvement with that team or not ) would not be surprised if he stays on Rafa’s coaching staff
Hanley was definitely not a bad buy filled a hole every time he was asked
the contract his was given was to long but surely that was Charnley not Rafa

Comment #27Newcastle United have won permission to bring a High Court challenge over the seizure of documents by tax officials investigating the financial affairs of several football clubs.
St James’ Park and West Ham United’s ground were raided in April by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) as part of a probe into suspected income tax and national insurance fraud.
Newcastle’s managing director Lee Charnley was among a number of senior European football officials arrested and later released without charge.
The club applied for permission to seek a judicial review of the search-and-seize order obtained by HMRC against Newcastle United FC.
Mr Justice Supperstone, sitting in London, said that it was “arguable” on several grounds that the search warrant was obtained unlawfully and ruled there must be a full court hearing of the issues.
During the raids, business records and financial records were seized, as well as computers and mobile phones belonging to the club, who recently secured promotion to the Premier League.
The HMRC investigation centres on football agents and payments made in transfer dealings between English and French clubs.
It has confirmed that the French authorities are assisting the UK investigation.
The judge ordered that a full hearing of the case should take place next month, probably over July 27-28.
Newcastle United argued the warrants were excessively wide, and there were no grounds to believe the club was engaged in suspected tax fraud.
Club lawyers also argued that the legal procedures followed when the warrants were obtained at Leeds Crown Court were flawed, and no proper reasons were given.
The judge said the absence of reasons made it harder for him to be satisfied the warrants were lawfully issued.
He added: “I am persuaded by Richard Lissack QC, who appears for the (club), that a number of points he takes in relation to other grounds of challenge make it at least arguable that their challenge to the warrants will succeed.”
He continued orders preventing HMRC officers from examining the seized material pending the full hearing.

Why are they so concerned about the tax office, unless of course they have something to hide, makes you wonder doesn’t it, if they’re clean then why not just let hmrc have access, sounds dubious to me !

If Pardew or McLaren had gone out and bought Gamez,Lazaar,Sels an Hanley and they would have failed to make any impact like they did this season ,they would have been ripped a new arsehole on here.
Things got that bad for Hanley that Hayden was being picked over him to the latter part of the season so I wouldn’t class him a success story.
Gamez did nothing nor did Lazaar. And after 9 games I think Rafa had seen enough to admit he made a royal f@ck up in bringing Sels to the club.
Mistakes happen we are all human, But these were bad buys

Comment #38Vincent Abubeker is playing for Cameroon in the confederations cup atm.I’ve to say I haven’t that impressed. He just missed a sitter few moments ago and isn’t that clinical upfront.I would suggest to bring back Andy Caroll or go for Jesse Rodriguez or Sandro Ramirez if still available.Nothing to get excited so far.

Comment #39I just hope we can sell those bad buys.. Cos we have plenty of them..
Saviet, Rivi, de Jong, gamez, Lazaar, diame,.. And we can add Grant, one of the keepers, Murphy, Colback, haidara on the list..and based on rumors also mitro and Mbemba.
We already dumped thauvin, Anita, goufrann, Sels.. And another 13 players on their way out.. Stacked with dead wood for many winters.. I’m just hoping pardew gets Sunderlands job, hires Carr to be his scout, who’d advise him ti sign most of them..

Go through the blog mate the year we were relegated.
Look at the reaction from the lads after match days.
He wasnt that great at the start of the season if memory serves me right against Fulham and Wolves.
Like I say mate I would hope he isn’t our no 1 left back at the beginning of the season
