There is a report today from Italy that Newcastle are interested in signing 30 year-old Brazilian-born central midfielder Romulo, who helped Verona get promoted from Serie B last season and he has previously played on loan at Juventus from 2014-2015.
Italian outlet Gazetta Dello Sport are reporting today that Newcastle are in talks with Hellas Verona for the player’s permanent transfer.
As far as we can tell, this is the first time we have been linked with the player, who usually plays in central midfield but can also play at right-back and on the wing.
30 year-old Brazilian-born central midfielder Romulo
Hellas Verona are now managed by Rafa’s former assistant coach at Newcastle, Fabio Pecchia, so that could mean the deal could get done rather quickly if there is truth to the report.
Romulo is of Italian descent and he moved from Brazil to Italy back in 2011 when he signed on at Italian club Fiorentina and he now has an Italian passport.
He played on loan at Hellas Verona in the 2013-2014 season before moving there permanently in July of 2014.
Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez watched him a number of times when he was manager of Napoli from 2013 through 2015, so Rafa will know all about this player and will have been updated by Fabio Pecchia.
In the summer of 2014, Romulo signed for Juventus on a year-long loan for €1M with an option for an outright buy for €6M (£5.2M), but his time there was hit by injuries.
He made 41 total appearances for Verona in Serie B last season, with four goals and 10 assists as Verona finished second top of Serie B, 4 points behind SPAL under new head coach Fabio Pecchia.
The 30-year-old playmaker is under contract with Verona until 2019.
Romulo is said to be a quick and hard-working box-to-box midfielder who has terrific stamina, so he should be well suited to the Premier League.
He has good vision and is good technically and he can play both as an attacking and defensive central midfielder.
The Brazilian/Italian can also play on either wing and at right back so he is extremely versatile and could be very useful at Newcastle.
From what we can tell Romulo has always been a very good player with things not quite working out for him at Juventus, with a number of injury problems getting in the way there.
But Rafa must rate the Brazilian if we are in talks with Verona for him to sign on for Newcastle.
