Report – Future To Be Sorted Out Imminently For Newcastle Target

Tuttomercatoweb.com in Italy are reporting today that the future of Pepe Reina could be decided today or early next week, as the saga on whether he will stay at Napoli has dragged on over several weeks now.

Rafa made it clear late last season that he rates Pepe Reina very highly and the experienced goalkeeper was always a positive voice of leadership in and out of the dressing room while he was at Liverpool for almost 10 years.

The report from Italy is that there is still no agreement on a new contract for Reina and that a decision over the goalkeeper’s future will be made imminently because Napoli are tired of the delay for a new contract to be worked out.

34 year-old Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina

If Pepe does not sign a new deal then he could leave and Napoli will want plenty of time to be able to bring in a new first team goalkeeper to the club for next season so it appears that push has come to shove at Napoli for Reina.

And as far as Newcastle are concerned, Rafa does seem to want to bring in a new experienced goalkeeper this summer, so it would help if we knew one way or the other whether Reina was staying in Italy or could move.

Newcastle are definitely keeping an eye on what is happening in Naples and if Pepe decides he cannot stay then Rafa could move in and sign his former Liverpool goalkeeper for Newcastle.

Certainly there doesn’t seem to be any certainty on what will happen with the 35 times capped Spanish International goalkeeper.

With pre-season training starting a week on Monday, Rafa will want to bring in a few players before that time with Newcastle so far having signed only one player this summer – when we made Christian Atsu’s loan deal from Chelsea permanent.

Maybe part of the grand plan is to sign a highly recognised player such as Reina and then that starts the domino effect of other players recognising that Newcastle are ambitious and will follow.

Would like this to be sorted soon but I dont see it happening tbh we want him but not to pay much for him, he wants to come (to get a longer contract), his family want to stay, Napoli want him to stay but not for very long, his agent wants money and there is a fresh fall out between him and the owner every day….it’ll drag unless Napoli give him the contract length he wants imo

Makes no sense at all that this guy seems to be our main target. An almost washed up keeper who’s best days are well behind him.

I’m really looking forward to this team:
    Reina
    Gibbs Lejeune Smalling Zeegelaar
    Samaris Delph Leiva Jota
    Boudebouz
    Ings

But, I must admit, I doubt whether it will be better than our 2013 buys:
    Ruddy
    Chedjou Kouyate N’Koulou Bridge
    Ince Hughes Spearing Langil
    Boudebouz
    Austin

Hes 34 and is the starting keeper for a good quality Italian club who play CL football, also by all accounts very much a leader behind the scenes

We must be up to 120+ linked players by now! Maybe RAFA should just put all the names in a hat and let Penfold pick a few out? 💡

OK……. I believe Pepe Reina is a good keeper but we have good keepers already at NUFC I can only assume that if Reina is brought in to Newcastle it’s because of his leadership abilities?

Any one know what is happening regarding Andros Townshend? It all seems to have gone very quiet on that front! At least we know what he is capable off on a football pitch – I hope we can get him back in and playing for Newcastle United.

Reina is better than the keepers we have mate numbers dont mean quality and the plan by all accounts is for Woodman to take over within 3 years so Reina would cover at least that length of time as well as offer huge amounts of experience to him

Townsend I doubt will happen now Palace are still managerless so once they come in they will take a look at him and either want to keep him or look to sell him but for a price out of our range Id imagine…good thing Rafa was ignored in January eh it’d of been a shame to have 2 quality wingers already in the team

washed up at 34!! that’s relatively still young for a keeper and the leadership and experience he would bring would be invaluable. Plus he’s just had a great season. rafa is ruthless and doesn’t do sentiment.

Read what I wrote again please and let’s not distort things. The comment I made was an “almost washed up keeper”….not a washed up keeper as you 3 put it.

As for main target it certainly seems that way, the goalkeeping department is probably the last position we need to strengthen given the numbers we currently. Plenty of other areas in the squad that need improving well before this.

We still lack serious creativity in the side, other than Shelvey who at times goes a little to Hollywood in his passing, we don’t have another player that can make things happen. Especially in the no10 position, the areas I believe need to be looked at well before a keeper are

    No10
    Dm
    Full backs (rb, lb)
    Wingers (lw, rw)
    CB
    ST

That’s the 8 we need in my opinion

A bit off the topic, but well done to the England under 21’s…..
However how does the semis work? There are 3 groups allowing the winners to advance to the semis and the best 2nd place finisher. But is it then a random draw? I have seen no indication in the press……
    Anybody know?

Age isnt really a huge issue with keepers its an experience based position really rather than youth, if we sign him on a 3 year deal he will probably be our starting keeper for atleast 2 of those and often enough in the last while Woody learns the trade from him rather than Darlow (who Rafa doesnt seem to rate too highly) and Elliott (a man happy to take a back seat for his career and isnt really very good at anything) and no one knows whats going on with Krul

The squad has other holes but doesnt mean we cant look to improve in as many of them as possible and when a cheap experienced quality goalkeeper who has a very good relationship with Rafa and is a fantastic attitude to have around becomes available it’d be daft to ignore it

Reina is for this season and next with idea of bringing along our star in waiting. Keepers tend to follow the style of who they are understudy to. Look at the Liverpool keepers who followed Bruce grobellar (however you spell it). They were all vocal shot stoppers but shit at dealing with crosses. Id take reina 100% but I fear he will just get his better deal. It’s all hand bags in Italy.

I know keepers can play alot longer than outfield players, and I understand the reasons why some want Reina. My issue with this is that we have been told we want between 6 to 8 players to add to the squad from this window so with that in mind the last position I want us to target is a goalkeeper who is coming to the latter part of his career.

We have so many weaknesses in other areas that should be property rather than a keeper so woodman can learn off him and he can give us a couple of years service.

For me a top vocal keeper is only 2nd to a top striker. Building from the back is something we’ve never done since keegan (his back line was underrated imho).
We have good keepers and a great upcoming talent in Woodman but we need leaders and someone great for him to learn from. Reina is perfect for that.

As for how many we need. 8 players would be first xi players in my opinion not squad players. I’d agree with that plus 3 or 4 squad players if rafa intends to be bullet proof which given his thorough nature I’d say he does.

The only certain startera we have are Ritchie and shelvey after that everyone’s place is up for grabs. That the kind of competition for places that breeds success.

In rafa I trust. He will deliver. It’s starting with Lejeune.

    reina would be great

    1. hes still a great keeper
    2. him coming here will attract other big names
    3. winning mentality
    4. everyone says hes a great leader on and off the pitch (lets face it, we dont really have a captain)

Mate Rafa will be after as many players as the budget will stretch too so we have no idea how many players we are looking to bring in…I really dont see how u can be against a quality player for a low amount, I doubt 2-4 mill will stop Rafa from building the squad he wants to build wages maybe but we should have a big pot of money for that as well Sels and Anitas wages would probably cover anything Reina will be after

As for Woodman Renia could be the difference between our keeper for 10-15 years or released and playing in league 1 in 3

    Nah not for me.

It would be a massive kick in the balls for Darlow, Elliott and Woodman. Plus We don’t need a goalkeeper.

We’re probably just being used by him to get a longer more lucrative contract from Napoli to be honest.

While Reina would be a good signing IF we needed a goalkeeper, and if he comes fair enough but as Our toon pointed out the rest of our team has to be a priority, we need some real quality through the door we’re a long way behind every other premier league club apart from Huddersfield and Brighton.
I’m sure Rafa will know what’s required and new players will be coming in soon.

From a couple of threads ago.

I reckon the £41m parachute payment plus any transfer profit plus the £30m loan from Ashley went towards players and coaching staff salaries.
