Tuttomercatoweb.com in Italy are reporting today that the future of Pepe Reina could be decided today or early next week, as the saga on whether he will stay at Napoli has dragged on over several weeks now.

Rafa made it clear late last season that he rates Pepe Reina very highly and the experienced goalkeeper was always a positive voice of leadership in and out of the dressing room while he was at Liverpool for almost 10 years.

The report from Italy is that there is still no agreement on a new contract for Reina and that a decision over the goalkeeper’s future will be made imminently because Napoli are tired of the delay for a new contract to be worked out.

If Pepe does not sign a new deal then he could leave and Napoli will want plenty of time to be able to bring in a new first team goalkeeper to the club for next season so it appears that push has come to shove at Napoli for Reina.

And as far as Newcastle are concerned, Rafa does seem to want to bring in a new experienced goalkeeper this summer, so it would help if we knew one way or the other whether Reina was staying in Italy or could move.

Newcastle are definitely keeping an eye on what is happening in Naples and if Pepe decides he cannot stay then Rafa could move in and sign his former Liverpool goalkeeper for Newcastle.

Certainly there doesn’t seem to be any certainty on what will happen with the 35 times capped Spanish International goalkeeper.

With pre-season training starting a week on Monday, Rafa will want to bring in a few players before that time with Newcastle so far having signed only one player this summer – when we made Christian Atsu’s loan deal from Chelsea permanent.
