Rafa Benitez Lines Up New Goalkeeper Target From Spain

There’s news in the Chronicle today that Rafa Benitez has contacted Real Madrid about two different things – first of all he has enquired about the status of their 30 year-old reserve goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.

Rafa is also interested in taking on loan any of the Real young stars who may be available for season long loans next season.

Former target 35 year-old free agent Willy Caballero is set to join Chelsea as the back up to their top Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Willy will likely get to play in Champions League football next season.

Things are also looking a little dim for our chances of getting Pepe Reina to the club and his agent yesterday said there had been no offers he had received from any club for Reina and in any case the fee of £5M for a 34 year-old is deemed too high by Newcastle.

But Rafa hasn’t given up on bringing in a new goalkeeper to Newcastle and now he has set his sights on Kiko Casilla who first signed for Real back in 2000 but left in 2007 to join Espanyol and stayed there until two years ago when he returned to Real.

Kiko has one Spanish cap and was signed by Rafa Benitez when he was the Real Madrid manager back in July 2015 and the goalkeeper cost €6M on a five year deal.

Casilla was brought in by Rafa to replace the legendary Iker Casillas who moved to Porto.

At Espanyol Casilla played 126 times for the first team but Kiko has only played 26 first team games for Real Madrid.

And since he’s never played in the English Leagues he may find it difficult, just like Matz Sels found it difficult at Newcastle last season and Claudio Bravo found it extremely difficult at Manchester City.

So maybe signing a continental goalkeeper this summer could be a risk and it may be much better to sign somebody with Premier League experience.

Casilla is deputy to Keylor Navas, but there have been signs that Real would like to get Spanish International David de Gea in from the Red Devils or AC Milan’s 18 year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma into the club as they also look to strengthen their goalkeeping department for next season.

So if that happens we suppose Casilla would be available, but we’d be a lot happier if Newcastle signed a goalkeeper with good Premier League expedience.

What do you think?

ShirebrookToon – Sorry I never answered your question last night as I went to sleep. I’ve read about Lejeune in many places but mainly on this blog where Ed has quoted several sources claiming he has told his friends he is moving.

Forget about goal keepers, not a priority until we at least have full backs, a midfielder and a striker!

I think Barnes is having a lot more say behind the scenes than most think.
Ashley’s trusted long term Mr Fix it has been brought in to sanction every financial penny both in and out of St James park.To the point where even Charnley now has to run things by him

Time is moving and Pre – Season is almost upon us, so I expect movement in the transfer market to start this week, I’m sure Rafa will get what he want’s or close to what he wants.

Although is frustrating at this time of year, I am still confident of having a great team for this season, we have been patient after the elation at the end of last season, but now we need some in’s and out’s to rekindle that euphoria that we ended with last season.

I trust Rafa, but not so much the brown nose Ashley followers that infest the corridors of power at SJP, so I guess “hope” is this week’s word. Let’s hope Rafa gets some transfers moving.

I think there will be 2-3 brought in on 1st-2nd July who we may or may not have been linked with, all these paper rumors and supposition are exactly that, Penfold is only just back from China ,talking to possible investors and drumming up interest in our club, (according to one article I read) we all know Penfold don’t multi-task, he’s lucky if he can walk and remember to breathe at the same time let alone negotiate player deals and speak to potential investors.

We can rest easy now that HMS Queen Elizabeth, Britain’s new aircraft carrier, is at sea for trials. However, it’s got no planes cos cuts don’t allow the money to buy any.

It’s just like Newcastle United – everything’s there apart from the players to do a job in the Prem.

    What price economy?

I thought it had to go through 2 years of sea trials, In which time the new compact strike force planes would be ready??

Agree that keepers are not a priority although the late Brian Clough reconed that a top class keeper was worth an extra 10 points a season. Krul & Elliott have Premier experinence and Darlow is shaping up pretty well so a new keeper is not top of my list of signings.

Defensive MF – Creative MF (how we missed Shelvey when he was out) we definately need a proven goalscorer a right back and also back up for other positions – hopefully we will get some players in this week! The thought of anything upsetting Rafa’s applecart scares the sh*t out of me!
