There’s news in the Chronicle today that Rafa Benitez has contacted Real Madrid about two different things – first of all he has enquired about the status of their 30 year-old reserve goalkeeper Kiko Casilla.
Rafa is also interested in taking on loan any of the Real young stars who may be available for season long loans next season.
Former target 35 year-old free agent Willy Caballero is set to join Chelsea as the back up to their top Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Willy will likely get to play in Champions League football next season.
Things are also looking a little dim for our chances of getting Pepe Reina to the club and his agent yesterday said there had been no offers he had received from any club for Reina and in any case the fee of £5M for a 34 year-old is deemed too high by Newcastle.
But Rafa hasn’t given up on bringing in a new goalkeeper to Newcastle and now he has set his sights on Kiko Casilla who first signed for Real back in 2000 but left in 2007 to join Espanyol and stayed there until two years ago when he returned to Real.
Kiko has one Spanish cap and was signed by Rafa Benitez when he was the Real Madrid manager back in July 2015 and the goalkeeper cost €6M on a five year deal.
Casilla was brought in by Rafa to replace the legendary Iker Casillas who moved to Porto.
At Espanyol Casilla played 126 times for the first team but Kiko has only played 26 first team games for Real Madrid.
And since he’s never played in the English Leagues he may find it difficult, just like Matz Sels found it difficult at Newcastle last season and Claudio Bravo found it extremely difficult at Manchester City.
So maybe signing a continental goalkeeper this summer could be a risk and it may be much better to sign somebody with Premier League experience.
Casilla is deputy to Keylor Navas, but there have been signs that Real would like to get Spanish International David de Gea in from the Red Devils or AC Milan’s 18 year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma into the club as they also look to strengthen their goalkeeping department for next season.
So if that happens we suppose Casilla would be available, but we’d be a lot happier if Newcastle signed a goalkeeper with good Premier League expedience.
