Newcastle were first linked with 25 year-old Saint-Etienne defender Kevin Malcuit back in early April, when there were reports coming out of France that Magpies boss Rafa Benitez was keen on the right-footed defender.
And there’s some news today that Newcastle are still interested but that Lille have put in a bid of around €7M (£6M) for the Frenchman, but that is unlikely to persuade him to move.
But the player has already expressed a wish to play in the Premier League in England and it’s unlikely he will want to remain in France if he leaves Saint-Etienne this summer.
25 year-old Saint-Etienne defender Kevin Malcuit
West Ham tried to sign the player during the January transfer window but were unsuccessful – but it’s likely that Rafa can get the player in with a decent deal of say around £7M – and he would be worth that in today’s ridiculous transfer market of high prices.
Malcuit is a good player with reports that Jose Mourinho could even we ready to make an offer for the player, who joined Saint-Etienne two years ago from Chamois Niortaisare.
While he generally plays as a right-back he has also played as a winger and even as a striker, so he is quite versatile, but we expect the full-back position is where Rafa will play him at Newcastle.
Malcuit was born in Châtenay-Malabry, a suburb of Paris and he started his career at Monaco and has now played 46 times with 5 assists for Saint-Etienne.
Rafa Benitez is hoping to bring in two full backs this summer to challenge DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett for the starting full-back positions next season.
We know Newcastle are trying to get a few good deals done, so this player would look like a very decent signing if we can get him through the door for around £7M.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #1I bet you if we put a 6M quid bid in, we will be told immediately they want at least 12M? All French clubs seem to believe we are awash with cash in England.

Comment #6It will be interesting to see what type of team we can put out (with some decent purchases). Will it be an attacking team – perhaps not. Will Rafa continue with his apparently favourite tactics of midfield control and one goalscorer to “catch ’em of the break”.
If we need at least half a dozen players (which I think we do) I suppose Benitez could shape the team anyway he wants.
I would love it if he signed up (forwards) who nobody knew about/under the radar types and play a few together to attack and attack. But I suppose it’s odd on for midfield control.

You might have something there…. The tax man would surely be impressed at how tidy the offices are. But, will he/ she check the bins outside?
And on a similar note,
Bobbybee,
Chelski’s awash with Abramovic’s money and I wonder if the powers that be have questioned where and how he got it. He’ll not alone among the very wealthy immigrants who’ve been encouraged to set up house in the UK and it goes without saying that this and recent former governments won’t question the source of their riches. Similarly, the home and international football governing bodies wouldn’t want to initiate FFFP related enquiries as they risk opening up can of worms – or losing out on their little ‘gifts’ from these guys.
It’s the old old story, the rich get away with dubious activities while poor old Joe Soap and his family get screwed for everything.
You’ll have noticed that in no way I’m suggesting that our illustrious owner is doing anything other than managing his wealth within the laws of the land.

Comment #9Lesh – true the rich can buy themselves out of trouble. No question about that.
As it is a slow news day I will risk venturing into other matters. Your mate Comrade Corbyn is secretely planning to be PM if the Tories collapse.
He is a firm believer in cutting out greenhouse gases and as such has authorised secret trials for the new aircraft carrier planes. They have to be carbon neutral – apart from what the pilot expells – vindaloos are banned.

Not sure Hayden is a very technical player, as you say. He’s quite good and his career may still go both ways. In fact, that’s the case with a lot of our players.
We need three new sure fire ones.

Oh yes, we can’t have pilots expelling the products of a heavy night out in Portsmouth into the atmosphere! The Maybot can deal with that by cutting their pay and mess rations!
Speaking of our ultra-modern no-expense spared carrier (of what we’re not yet certain of) has a super sophisticated and secure software system which runs on er, Windows XP.
There’s not much for Ashley to teach them when it comes to spending our money! 😉

Comment #20Hibbit, News in from Newcastle United Football Club. Newcastle United have reserved two coaches from J & M Travel Coach to collect all the players coming in on July 1st 2017.
All players will be run through drills with Rafa over seeing which ones he wants to sign, player and agents have stressed that it is important to show Rafa what they have to offer to gain a contract at Newcastle United.
Each coach has a 51 seat capacity so expect one hundred players reporting, agents have to make there own way to the ground. Wow is all kicking off at Newcastle United.

Yes at least double – 90,000 capacity not sure what it will be for league games.
But I thought away teams in the premiership had to get a percentage of capacity.
Even if it was 5% we would get 4,500 for a 90,000 capacity
if 70,000 5% would be 3,500.

Are Sperz being serious? 3000 away fans leaving room for a home contingent of 87k – including god knows how many freebies!
Wembley’s proved to be problematic for Sperz so let’s hope they fall flat when playing home games.
