Report – Newcastle Showing Keen Interest In Argentine International Defender

Even though Newcastle have already been linked with 149 different transfer targets this summer – as far as we can tell we have never been linked with Benfica’s 27 year-old Argentine International center-back Lisandro Lopez.

That’s unless we’ve been asleep of course.

But news today in Portuguese newspaper O Jogo that as in addition to Newcastle being interested in signing Andreas Samaris from Benfica, we are also showing a keen interest in signing Lisandro Lopez as well.

Benfica’s 27 year-old Argentine International center-back Lisandro Lopez

The 27-year-old joined Benfica back in 2013 from Argentine club Arsenal de Sarandion on a five-year contract and he can also play at right-back.

He has been capped 4 times for Argentina but has played only 46 times for Benfica with 5 goals and 3
assists and is not a regular in the side.

O Jogo are reporting that Lopez could be made available for transfer this summer, but we wonder if the 27 year-old is good enough for Newcastle?

The player has dual citizenship – both Spanish and Argentine, so he would easily be able to get a work permit.

We’d be a bit surprised if Newcastle are really looking at bringing this player into the club.

But you never know, although there have been some inaccurate transfer stories coming out of Portugal in the past.

But hey – if Rafa rates him he could well arrive at Newcastle.

What do you think?

    Ed,

You’re nearly as bad as The Chronic – spreading all these transfer rumours. When something happens it’ll happen, don’t lose sleep over it marra.

Transfers can’t be official until July 1st which is 4 days away. Maybe we have already signed players and they’ve had clauses inserted to remain silent until we can officially unveil them. Atzu was a different kettle of fish because fans where aware of his situation. The club obviously felt that they had to let fans know that he had signed. If we unveil players and they change their minds/gave their heads turned by another club before July 1st it would read as ‘not getting them over the line’ and we would rightly be upset. Let’s just chill a bit, trust in Rafa and see what happens next week!

I thought the European Window opened 1st July? I might have been miss-informed.

Well done Ed, managed to find a player out there we haven’t already been linked with! 🙂 Talk about silly season. Can’t wait to see who we actually finish up with. I expect Rafa to have one or two surprises up his sleeve like last summer. Love it if he can pull out one or two unexpected gems from his wide range of contacts throughout the footballing world. Someone to get us off our seats.

Mark – it’s been explained on here a few times.
Players contracts typically finish at the end of June – so new contracts typically commence no sooner than !st July. You obviously cannot register your new player with the authorities until he has a contract – hence registrations commence from 1st July.

Clearly keeping quiet until after 1st July is sensible as it prevents other clubs nipping in with bigger offers etc.

Interesting we are being linked to so many players in Portugal – have we suddenly started scouting there or something?

Mark, from previous. Aye, I was bitten once by the Haitian – can’t remember which one, black or brown – but it was like a bad bee sting, nothing more than that. Bit woozy and red and swollen, but hardly life threatening.
Yet you have the very placid Mexican red knee, which includes rattlesnakes as part of its menu in the wild! Still got a soft spot for spiders. 🙂

As far as we know – (based on how the club operated it’s signings last summer) the club could already have new players signed up – and just have not made any public announcements so far. Note the use of “could”.

BREAKING. Newcastle. Are about to sign there second player. It’s been kept Quiet as It seems it’s rafa main target. But he’s Proud to announce this one today. He’s been brought in to bulk up the defence and thinks other defenders in the team wl learn and improve from his strength and ability. Newcastle will announce this later today but I thought I’d let you lads know first. The signing of adebayo akinfewa. Thank me later. Bout time we did some dealings

Tuff – I hope you’re right but these days with social media these things have a habit of getting out. The player only has to mention he is moving to a friend and it is all over Twitter. Plus what about the medicals?

Haha that made me chuckle mate.

The window is open now and likely good of us already agreeing to sign players but delaying the announcement is bonkers. The player could sign a clause saying he can’t speak of the transfer but makes no sense for the selling club does it? It’s a hopeful shot in the dark for hope!!

Tuff you are right the window opened on 9th June

martoon “AncientC – I guess that seems a lot but probably a lot less than Rafa and some of the players – not many businesses where the MD earns less than the employees below him!”

Professional football isn’t like many other businesses. It is the norm for players to earn more than a director, simply put, because professional footballers possess a rarer talent than directors. I don’t see why Charnley should be receiving a 40% pay increase when the wage bill is being cut by 17%.

in the immortal words of Jake Burns, “we just told them , wait and see”
If it gets to August 31st and we have no team to compete I’ll be disappointed but more than that….I’ll be surprised , We still have over 2 months of the window to go and people are panicking, imho, we’ll get a couple in before the start of preseason but keep our powder dry for a striker and no10 till a bit later in the window, once a few teams have traded we’ll see better how the market is, at the moment there are still 2 football competitions going on and the rest of the players are on holiday…….not many teams are dealing anywhere in Europe or the rest of the world for that matter, were not alone in that…..

Hibit. I’ll think he’ll be a great addition to the team?. Getting bored of all players linked with no end product. But I do think rafa will have a few surprises up his. Sleeve. Am sure it was same when we got. Relegated. Linked with so many players and turned out there was no real interest in them. Rafa pulled out a lot surprises when we went down. Getting players from premier league 2 drop down when they had offers to stay in Premier league. People saying we can’t compete with big boys is a lot of tosh. If rafa can pursue players to drop down a level he can certainly get good quality players to join him this time round. I would happily bet that we buy a player that will surprise all fans and that has not been picked up by media. Happened b4 and will happen again. HTWL

    .

Why did Rafa say he wants new players in before the start of pre season training next week if he can’t actually sign anyone till July 1st. ?
And how come Huddersfield’s deal with Mooy was completed weeks ago if this is the case ?

Charnley told Tudor Crisps in Greggs in Gosforth – the first official announcement of a signing would be Wednesday

Mooys’ contract ended on 31.5.17 – so he was able to sign for anybody therefter – as he was no longer under contract.
July 1st is the date when clubs register their players with the football authorities.

The window opens in England as of 9th June. Any transfers from English club to English club get completed at earliest 9th June. If Mooy played for a European side the deal would have gone through but completed on 1st July

I’ve just read that Charlie Taylor is moving from Leeds to Burnley on a free! I would have thought that was the kind of deal that we would have liked but I never read of any interest from us. I was impressed with him when we played Leeds and we need a Left Back!
