Newcastle fans are hoping that this week we will get our second signing through the door and it looks like it will be 26 year-old French center-back Florian Lejeune.
That deal has seemed to stall for over two weeks with the deadlock being caused by the way Newcastle want to pay Eibar the £8.7M release clause in his contract.
So we are hoping at the very least that deals go through before preseason starts up next Monday and our players start returning to the club.
27 year-old Argentine International center-back Lisandro Lopez
But there was also news in the last couple of days that Rafa Benitez was also interested in Argentine International center-back Lisandro Lopez from Benfica, who has trouble getting a first team place at the Portuguese giants.
We have also been interested in their 28 times capped Greece International central midfielder Andreas Samaris, but the fee of around £17M seems high for another player who is struggling for first team games at the club.
There are reports out of Portugal today (O Jogo) that Newcastle will have to pay around £26M for the two players – and to us that does not seem like a very good deal for Newcastle
It seems no other club seem interested in either player, so that should be an advantage to Newcastle to try to get a much better deal than £26M for the two Internationals.
O Jogo are reporting Benfica want £8.7M (€10M) for Lisandro and £17.3M (€20M) for Samaris, so maybe they can get a good deal on one of these players but not at the prices Benfica currently want.
Newcastle went in initially for Samaris and it may be that Benfica have offered their center-back as part of a double deal, since they know Rafa Benitez wants to get two center-backs through the door this summer.
The O Jogo report goes onto say it would not be too difficult for the clubs to reach an agreement if they both give a little.
We’ll see if that turns out to be true.
