News today that Newcastle are keen on Hamburg’s German International midfielder Lewis Holtby, who played for Tottenham and on loan at Fulham back in 2013 through 2015.
The report is in the Mirror and it’s the first time this summer we have been linked with the 26 year-old, who previously played for Schalke 04, before moving to Tottenham in 2013.
Holtby, 26, had two years at White Hart Lane but struggled to get a first team place and in January of 2014 he was sent out on loan to Fulham, where he played 13 times with one goal but he couldn’t prevent them from being relegated that season.
26 year-old Hamburg midfielder Lewis Holtby
The report is that he could be available for around £5M and it’s becoming clear that Newcastle are trying to pick up bargain buys and seem not to want to pay huge fees for any one player – at least this summer.
Nathan Ake went to Bournemouth for a cool £20M on Wednesday and there’s news in the local papers that while we were interested in the player, £20M was thought to be far too much for the 22 year-old.
But maybe this is what the new transfer window looks like, although Chelsea have included a buyback clause in Ake’s contract, so it he really becomes a star player then they will buy him back.
Heaven forbid that Bournemouth should keep him in that case – that’s not a good deal for the buying club.
We mention Bournemouth and Ake because the ambitious Cherries are said to be interested in Lewis Holtby who we always through looked a good player when he played in England.
Lewis played 24 times for the German U21 side with 14 goals and he 3 full caps for Germany making his debut way back in November, 2010 in a friendly against Sweden when he had only just turned 20.
£5M would appear to be a fairly low risk proposition for Newcastle, but it’s a good question as to whether he can play well in the Premier League.
In the three years he’s been at Hamburg he’s been a regular starter and has played 90 times with four goals for the Bundesliga club and while at Tottenham he played 42 times with 3 goals.
What do you think about this player?
Comments welcome.

Comment #91Don’t ask Shirebrook! My repeal lasted all of one day mate! 🙂 False dawn. Still, I am an optimist and hopefully that was the start of a slow but sure road to improvement. Whatever is bunching me up somehow released itself the other day, so I’ve got to be hopeful it can happen again. Not ready to throw the towel in just yet matey.

The only thing that surprises me is people still believe ur nonsense…well that and why a Swansea fan feels the need to troll Newcastle fans, maybe too small of a club to have a real rival I suppose

Comment #97I never worry about the shyt hitting the fan until it does. Either way, that’s the time to clean it up. There’s never anything we can do to prevent it unfortunately, so all we can do is address it after the event.
Getting stressed at what might go wrong is a path to an early grave! Got enough of our own problems to worry about without getting upset at what might or might not happen.

Comment #111The fact that top targets have been missed and we not even close to signing anyone at the moment, we will be going to the next stage where we will be targeting 4th, 5th choice of players on the list, so when the season starts we not going to be strong enough.

Comment #112Half time, we’ll deserved 1-0 to Germany, who have bossed the first half. Wonderful header to score the goal.
Didn’t realise that Gnabry(?) had left Arsenal. Always looked a useful player when he played. Turns out he’s gone to Munich who are looking to loan him out. Left winger who can cross a ball and has no shortage of pace. Just a thought.

Comment #115Could it be all this transfer inactivity.
New finance person in place, RAFA not a happy with transfer plans, players like Mitro being offered to clubs plus others already left and surplus to requirements Ashley is gearing up for selling the club ASAP. Especially if the TOON get the TV money at the start of the season plus last years Championship money, he is going to strip down the club take the TV money sell up and run???????

Comment #117Charlie, you get the money for the PL at the end, not the start of a season mate. Wouldn’t put it past him like, but that money can’t be touched yet. I suspect we’ll find out what, if anything other than stupid prices is holding up the movement.
Interestingly, the commentator on this game said Everton – I think, or Arsenal – had triggered the release clause of a player in Spain, but the club refused to deal until early July. Don’t know why, but it might be to do with tax years again?
Anyway, second half is calling.

It dont make sence to risk all that sky money by not investing enough to stay in the prem.
I think the lack of investment is coming back to haunt us.
We have next to nought coming through the ranks atm thats good enough to sell never mind make our first team.
If fattie knows hes not gonna put money into the club now would be the time to sell but i doubt anyone would pay the 450 mill asking price.

I think the lack of investment is coming back to haunt us.
Just not true
You could say something came back to haunt us in 2015/6 when we were relegated.
We did buy Wijnaldum ,Mitro, M’Bemba and Thauvin in Summer 2015 for £46 m
Which would tend to emphasise it’s the quality of the coaching team which is more important than buying players for the sake of it.
