Rafa Benitez wants to bring in an experienced goalkeeper to add some experience to the Newcastle defense for next season.
And so far we have missed out on both Pepe Reina of Napoli and former Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, who was a free agent and signed on at Chelsea yesterday.
Either of those two players would have been good additions to the Newcastle squad.
Joe Hart on loan last season at Torino
There have been rumors this summer we were interested in England goalkeeper Joe Hart and news in the Mail yesterday that Newcastle have made an enquiry for the goalkeeper, who has no future at Manchester City under manager Pep Guardiola.
But Joe is not worth £20M to us – if that is the price put on Joe’s head by City – and maybe a season on loan at Newcastle would be a better proposition and Rafa could then assess how Joe is over a full season.
Certainly Joe will want to play first team football next season so he can keep his place in the England side for the World Cup in Russia next summer.
But it doesn’t seem to make any sense for Newcastle to pay out a huge outlay for a goalkeeper when that seems the least of our concerns with the side.
Rob Elliot and/or Karl Darlow are able to get the job done for for us next season in the Premier League.
We expect veteran Tim Krul to be sold this summer, although Rafa’s intentions for the Dutch International are not really clear and we expect top young prospect Freddie Woodman to be loaned out to a Championship club for the season so he gets first team games.
Matz Sels will spend next season on loan at Anderlecht where he will get some Champions League experience back in Belgium.
What do you think about getting Joe Hart on loan?
