Newcastle have been linked with Rennes striker Adama Diakhaby earlier this summer and today French daily L’Equipe are reporting the Magpies are ready to put in a bid for the 21 year-old Rennes striker.
But the bad news is that Newcastle will now face competition from French Champions Monaco.
The initial report in L’Equipe was at the end of June and was that Newcastle ‘could’ make an offer for the young Rennes striker in the ‘coming days’.
21 year-old Rennes striker Adama Diakhaby
That didn’t seem to be a very strong link at that time to Newcastle but now L’Equipe are reporting that we are close to bidding for the striker, who only turned 21 yesterday.
But the report is that talks have already taken place between Monaco and Rennes and the player now wants to join the French Champions.
Maybe Newcastle should have made their move earlier, but we seem to be having trouble signing players this summer and that’s a big surprise to us.
In 29 games last season the young striker scored 5 goals for Rennes and Benitez is now interested in recruiting the 2 times capped French U21 International.
Last season was the first time the youngster played in the Rennes first team.
Adama was born on the Island of Ajaccio in France and he is of Senegalese descent and can therefore play for either France or Senegal at the senior International level.
Diakhaby is left footed and is versatile and can play out on either wing or up front as an out-and-out striker.
He could be a good signing for Newcastle this summer, but it’s not good news that Monaco and now after him.
