Is Andros Townsend Still A Transfer Target Of Rafa Benitez This Summer?

Rafa Benitez did not want Andros Townsend to leave the club last summer and he met twice with the player and his agent in an attempt to get him to stay with Newcastle down below for only one season.

But of course there was never any guarantee that we would come straight back up, even though we were the lowest odds Championship club ever at odds-on to win the Championship – never mind just get promoted.

We eventually did that with about a minute left in the season but it was hardly easy – in fact it was very very tough.

A great shot of Rafa Benitez and Andros Townsend on the touchline last year

Raga was keen to sign two players in the January window and they were Andros Townsend and James McCarthy from Everton.

And usually the players we went after in January are now strong targets this summer, but we’ve heard very little about Townsend of late and one time earlier this summer it looked like he could be our very first signing.

Of course Crystal Palace now have a new manager in to replace Sam Allardyce and he’s the former Ajax and Inter-Milan boss Frank de Boer,

Frank was the overriding favorite of Newcastle fans two years ago when Lee Charnley made another mistake and appointed the woeful Steve McClaren as the head coach.

Maybe Andros seems like it would better to stay in London at Palace under the new manager, who of course loves to play attacking football.

Our understanding is that Andros still has a release contract of £13M in his contract, so if the Magpies are willing to pay that we are then allowed to talk to the player and discuss terms.

£13M for Andros Townsend in today’s wild transfer market would be seem like a very good buy for us with very low risk since he played so well for Rafa when he was at Newcastle – the best he’s played in his career probably.

That’s especially true when we seem to be finding players difficult to  bring in this summer because most are overpriced.

But with total silence from Newcastle on Townsend, maybe we have already made an approach and Andros wants to stay put?

Wonder if the local journalists have any insight on this since Rafa has hardly been slow to let everybody know he really rates Andros as a player?

He would be a very popular signing.

Here’s the results of the poll we put out in mid-January and it was really to find out if our fans would forgive Andros for leaving us in our time of need.

They would!

If Townsend had a 13 mill release clause more teams would be after him and his agent would be pushing them also no way Palace (or any club) put in a release clause equal to what they paid unless it was a relegation clause

Ud be talking 20+mill to get him

We should be aiming higher than townsend.

Demaray Gray is the player. Throw in Loftus Cheek on loan with an option to buy

expat – morning how’s things. Townsend had his opportunity with us and firmly gave us the two fingers. As you say better players out there.

Bargain basement – yes there are good players in there – the skill is identifying them.

I actually think we have the makings of a very good squad and we really only need to tweek a few positions.

An injury free Dejong and Aarons plus a re-motivated Saveit and Krul would be major bonuses in the creativity and pace areas in particular.

That would allow us to concentrate on spending the majority of our budget on 2 or 3 crucial pisitions

expat – I notice you use the word squad and not team.
I’ve always thought we need half a team – 5/6 players to get a TEAM capable of holding it’s own in the PL.
What we get depends on the ambition/pot available for this coming season. Plus of course some pulling power of Benitez himself.
