The Chronicle is reporting that latest transfer target Newcastle are looking closely at is a central midfielder who currently plays in the Spanish League, but who that may be – we can only hazard a guess – as usual.
Our second arrival this summer, announced last Monday was from Eibar who are also in the Spanish First Division.
Florian is looking like a decent enough buy at around £8.8M, although he has yet to play one game for the Newcastle first team of course.
The Chronicle report is that Newcastle have held talks with the central midfielder in Spain, so we suppose a bid could be forthcoming from Newcastle – we hope a bid is forthcoming from Newcastle, as long as he is a good player who Rafa rates.
19 year-old Barcelona central midfielder Carles Alena
We’ve looked through our long list of transfer targets this summer and have found three central midfielders who currently ply their trade in La Liga.
They are the following:
- Carles Alena, 19, from Barcelona who is coming through at the Spanish club but has only played 4 times for the Barcelona first team.
- Gabriel Appelt Pires, 23 from CD Leganes who we were heavily interested in earlier in the summer.
- Víctor Camarasa 23, a Spanish U21 International who was at Levante, but only last week he signed for Real Betis on a five year deal.
Of the two remaining, we are hoping it is Carles Alena who is very well thought of at Barcelona, but he needs to get first team playing time out on loan next season.
Carles Alena has so far only played four games for the Barca first team. and he is the current captain of the Spanish U19 side.
A report in the Sun in late May said that Rafa wanted to bring him to Tyneside this summer, but that will likely only be for a loan.
Carles seems a talented young player who has played 38 times for the Barcelona B side with four goals, but he lacks experience and how he would fare in the tough Premier League next season is a good question.
Late last year there was news that Manchester United were after the youngster, who has been dubbed the ‘new Andres Iniesta’.
He has been likened to Barcelona’s 33 year-old veteran by the coaches at the Catalan giants.
Carles is obviously a good young player, but he would probably only be available on loan without an option to buy, because he is so well regarded at Barcelona.
We don’t particularly like those deals for Newcastle, but we suppose it does save us some transfer money this summer – which appears to be in short supply by the way Newcastle are penny-pinching on all their deals again.
If Carles came on loan to Newcastle this summer, the Spanish club would expect him to play for the Newcastle first team, so he has to be good enough to get games.
That’s Rafa’s call and if he thinks he’s good enough – so be it.
Of course if he’s anything like Iniesta he should be able to play well in the Premier League, even at 19.
What do you think about this?
