News in the Mail today that Rafa Benitez is still interested in 27 year-old Manchester City’s England central midfielder Fabian Delph, but at £12M it’s not looking like a good deal for Newcastle at the moment.
It’s obvious that Rafa rates the former Aston Villa playmaker and it’s definitely expected that Fabian will leave the Manchester club this summer and City would prefer a permanent deal.
Fabian has had a bit of a miserable time of it since he signed for City two years ago from Villa for around £8M – and he’s made only 39 appearances in that time – mostly as a late sub – but he still managed to score four goals.

It seems that Stoke are in the lead to sign him, unless Newcastle come up with an offer that meets City’s evaluation of their 9 times capped England International.
What Rafa is said to like about Fabian is his mobility in midfield and as we keep hearing, Rafa is not too happy – at least at the moment – with Newcastle’s transfer business this summer, which has been a little slow and cumbersome so far.
But a couple of new players signed in the next couple of weeks will do a lot to lift the mood at Newcastle.
While at Aston Villa for six years before joining City, Fabian played 134 times with 8 goals and had 8 assists.
Delph is a good technical player and Rafa could certainly bring out the best in him, because this lad certainly has the skills and the ability – he just needs to play and who knows he could become part of the England setup again under Gareth Southgate with regular games for Newcastle.
Earlier in the summer we thought we could get Delph for around £6M given he cost £8M two years ago – but that doesn’t look possible now with this summer’s inflated transfer prices.
