Newcastle United have been given the option of buying Swansea City left-winger Jefferson Montero, and that was also true in January but the club have so far resisted taking up that option.
We’ve watched Montero look world-class for Swansea at times and we’ve also watched him have the poorest of games on the left wing so the player is very inconsistent, although he’s loaded with skills.
And maybe if Newcastle took up the option of buying him for a low £4M Rafa Benitez could get the best out of him?
27 year-old Swansea winger Jefferson Montero
If we cannot get some of our other winger targets in this summer Rafa may have to bring in the 63 times capped Ecuadorian International (10 goals) who joined Swansea in the summer of 2014 from Mexican club Monarcas Morelia on a four year deal.
Montero was at Villareal from 2009 until he left in 2012 so Rafa will have been told all about the left winger – about how he trains and about his character and temperament.
Montero has one year left on his contract at the Swans and he’s played 72 times with 2 goals and 11 assists for Swansea, and while he was at Villarreal he played only 20 games with 2 goals and 3 assists for the first team.
Montero certainly has skill and pace but it’s his consistency that worries us.
In his career he’s played 205 first team games with 19 goals and 29 assists.
What do you think?

Comment #83Those Talksport pundits just say anything to get punters to call in and get involved in heated discussion. The comment about Rafa not knowing how to pick cheaper players is typical and they said last year that he didn’t know the Championship as well.
They were crucifying Arsene Wenger for not selling Sanchez! Why should he? He signed a contract!

Comment #88Clearly there’s no where near the money available as so many thought. We may be surprised by a class player or two but I won’t hold my breath. Not looking good I’m afraid.
Just as expected tbh.

Comment #91My prediction, Ashley will not allow us to end the transfer window with a squad that is in danger of being relegated again, as far as you can guarantee that in football, and if necessary he’ll do the same in the January window. Ashley’s money will be our ultimate safety net, with so much now at stake.

Comment #93Runaway, nobody is twisting anybody’s arm to buy a ST mate. I get mine because I signed up to a ten year deal and will happily sign another one. For a lot of us it’s about watching football and supporting the team on the pitch, not this feeling of entitlement that we should be fighting for top four places. Do Hartlepool fans refuse to go to games because they have no investment whatsoever, or go to support their team? Yes, it would be nice to have an owner willing to pile his own cash into the club, but there’s not many of those about. It’s a sport, not a political movement. You don’t have to go if you don’t like it mate, 52k others will though. Winning is nice but it isn’t everything in life. If winning is all that matters, you’re supporting the wrong team. In case you hadn’t noticed, we won nowt for decades before Ashley came along. Was that his fault as well? He’s a dick, but 99% of owners are dicks.

Comment #95Trying to stay positive despite some uneasiness as we seem (so far at least!) to be missing out on several key transfer targets. Had one nice realization: it is very nice to go thru a summer window without hearing any NUFC player asking to be sent to a “bigger” club. Nice!
Rafa seems to be keeping true to his vow that Newcastle should not be seen by any potential incoming prospects as merely a “stepping stone”!

Comment #96I’m really surprised that CB at Ajax, Sanchez isn’t being targeted by loads of clubs- I don’t mean us, he’ll obviously want CL but he looked seriously good through the Europa League.

Comment #97Sorry for the double post but if it’s true that Zouma is going out on loan- that would be an insanely good signing in my opinion, though I’d be surprised if they let him leave at all considering they play 3 at the back!

Comment #100Firstly, we cannot accommodate Zouma. We currently have enough centre back. Even on loan, there would be substantial codts involved.
We need to get rid of players. For example, if we want Gibbs and Jenkinson from Arsenal, we need to get rid of Gamez Haidara and Lazaars.
If we want another centre forward, we need to get rid of Riviere Murphy and/or Mitrovic.
The likes of Armstrong Sterry and Woodman need to be loaned out to top end championship sides at least.
Once the squad is trimmed, then we can go to the likes of Norwich, Arsenal etc and offer realistic prices for quality players.
Gibbs and Jenkinson……15 million for both
Murphy…..they want 15, we have offered 8. Go back and offer 10 plus another 2 based on the number of senior England caps.

Comment #106Personally I think the way to go is getting in the players Rafa want for right positions and then trim.
Always make sure you have the player you want before you sell…we have so many unsellable players that playing the waiting game is just too dangerous.
Hence why it’s so important that you don’t just buy numbers. Neither Lazaar, Gamaz, Murph, Hanley should have had such a long running contract.
Sels was just one of these buys you get wrong.

Comment #107Here’s one to mull over.
Atletico Madrid are desperate for Diego Costa who is not part of Contés plans.
Diego Simeone is prepared to meet his £30 million price tag.
However they are prohibited from registering a new player until January 2018.
So he couln’t kick a ball for them until then !
We could take him on a 6 month loan for a fee plus a deal on wages .
He would get regular game time in the PL and we could look at the striker situation in winter when some clubs have been knocked out the CL.
To add piquancy to this scenario – the Toon play Chelsea at the Bridge on December 2nd

In an ideal world, that would be the way to go but with sky high salaries taking up so much of annual budgets, the more money saved is equal to
