Elliot, Haidara, Aarons, Atsu, Shelvey And De Jong All Start Against Hearts

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has named his side for the first preseason friendly of this preseason against Hearts at Tynecastle tonight and he has left out Karl Darlow who is still in talks with Middlesbrough on a possible move from Newcastle.

Here is the team:

So it looks like Rafa is giving a chance to some of the fringe players such as Haidara, Mbemba and de Jong.

This is their chance to play well and be part of the first team squad for the upcoming season – it seems particularly important for Dutchman Sien de Jong, who could be playing in the number 10 position tonight.

It would be great to see Siem put in a good performance tonight – he’s a talented player but still has to prove himself at Newcastle.

We also expect it to be all change at half time, as Rafa gives as many players a run-out as possible tonight.

Rafa will also want to instill a winning attitude in his players and even though it’s a friendly he will want a win tonight.

Only when we don’t win the game will we say – well it’s only a friendly and the result doesn’t really matter.

🙂

Howay The Bonnie Lads!!

Darlow is definitely on his way oot. Would rather not have Gamez on the bench after last season. Move him out Rafa….

I am serious about Hakan Calhanoglu. Excellent player. And we could sign him for less wages. AMF and on the rise.

Mbemba right back? Or 3 at the back with Aarons/Atsu wing back?

Mbemba at full back could be the wild card and be the reason we are not linked with full backs. It is a role he should be comfortable playing and has played on occasion before. It isn’t as defensively disciplined a role, and that is the aspect of his game that has seen him fall down the pecking order for centre halves at the club.

I can understand why the confusion is there regarding a new GK when we have other areas which are clearly much more of a priority. However, Rafa knows what he’s doing. He prefers to build from the back first, then the spine, then the wings. While he sees wingers as interchangable, his building from the back relies a lot on having a goalkeeper who can distribute. I have never seen a GK distribute as effectively as Reina, even to feet. The only other keeper who ever came close is Elliott in that department at least. so I understand the need to maintain possession when we can’t penetrate and have to come back to the keeper’s feet. It adds A LOT to a team when you have a GK who can do that.
I also am not entirely sure that he is “prioritising” one over the other. We know that we have been linked to nearly 200 names in all areas, and most of them are the possitions we the fans deem a priority.
All I’m saying is that we don’t know exactly what Rafa’s priority is but if he’s building from the back first and we disagree, tough titties. He knows what he’s doing.

Reason we lost out on Joe Hart is because we only wanted to cover 25% of his wages.
    West Ham offered 50%
    Guess who won

    Shirebrook,
If it is 3 at the back it will be very interesting to see how we play that. I wouldn’t say any of those 3 are comfortable being the player to drop off, although, Mbemba is most likely. The worry there is he also likes to push out and on occasion follow the ball/man, which ruins our shape completely, and is quite likely to be why Rafa didn’t trust him last year. If Rafa is looking for 3 at the back, I think one more centre half is likely to be signed, all of our current crop are very similar.

    YoungMag,
I prefer the flat back 4 with Mbemba full back to 3 at the back given this selection. It will be interesting to see how we start, but it is also easily interchangeable.

    Ah, the quickening has begun.

I am guessing Mbemba is playing RB. It is possible Mbemba will be replacing Anita to fight for the RB slot with Yedlin for this season.

So we’re suddenly going to the in vogue 3 at the back? I hope Rafa isn’t being as pathetically weak minded and easily swayed as Arsene Wenger was to change an entire formation and playing style just because some big teams have started using it.

Honestly, that Wenger changed everything after Chelsea had a few successful months with 3 at the back- same for the other managers who changed because it was in vogue.

Result is irrelevant, but it will be interesting to see(hear in my case) shape and style in this first game, as well as how the fringe players perform.
